hi prof. jim!

hope you have some good updates for willow :)

do you know when the willow clean up is this year? i know there have been access/bolt issues that's come up. perhaps a good clean up turn out will help appease the ranger folks.

good to see you on MP.

yo glenn...haven't been to willow for a while...i climbed in eldorado and little cottonwood canyon this spring, (i used the guides from MP to navigate my solos of ruper (Tower one), bastille crack, and werks up (at eldorado) and the coffin and satan's corner in little cottonwood (utah/wasatch range/little cottonwood) I just returned from beacon rock (near portland, or) where my southern ill partner (Joseph) from the 70's has been very active in stewardship at beacon (a trad area in a state park). see washington/beacon link on MP...Cascade Climbers also has an interesting fourm with lots going on...i'm heading back there in august when my son gets married on the oregon coast.

say, what as happened to minn climbing.com? i know about the crash, but now you can't access the forum w/o logging on? i can't remember my new username, so i guess i'm out of luck. i miss that grapevine...
peace to you, and nice work here at MP...hope to get some dialogue going re. to stewardship of midwest rock...

your user id is tangen_foster...

regarding minnesotaclimbing.com, we are still rebuilding the site and only allowing logged in users to view/reply to the forum, once we have the site completely rebuilt, we'll more that likely open it back up to the public.

Climb alone. Except with Wilson on my helmet!

Glad your getting the Minnesota climbing board back up.

Although too much computer stuff and not enough climbing is not good.

You have fun though.

Hi Glenn . Not much more I can tell you about Shovel Point other than what I posted under the Ross's Crack info . Its been awhile !! . We did clean and climb about a dozen or more routes over that summer . We only used a selection of the intermediate routes for the students . I put up others for our own amusement. There was no sign of any previous exploration .This was quite obvious due to the massive amount of loose rock we removed from most of the climbs. Hard work but fun if your into trundling..... Over that summer we saw no other climbers except ourselves...Actually I was pleasantly surprised that it became an on the map climbing area. You will find an email address for me on Mountain Project if you need more info. We new route in the Moab area and the near bye San Rafael Swell on Mountain Project.

Hey there Glenn...Midwest Represent!

I hail from Minnesota, and I will go back there this august to go to my high school reunion and get some climbing in at Taylor's Falls and Barne's Bluff. Two places I have fond memories of visiting as a child, but have never climbed.

I took up climbing in the past two years out here in Eugene, OR. So perhaps I'll see some of you out on the rocks.

How are the rangers on the Wisconsin side of the St. Croix? Can you still cliff jump without getting a ticket?

Cheers,

-jack

Hello Jack,

Your inquiry about the Wisconsin rangers brought back a funny memory from the late 1970's.
My brother and I had hitchhiked from Bloomington to TF where we met a couple of friends and planned on spending the 4th of July weekend climbing.
After spending the first day on the Minnesota side, we hiked over the bridge with intentions of spending the night illegally camped on the Wisconsin side.
The campgrounds were full to capacity, so we were hiking the road into the park. When a car was approaching we would duck into the woods until it had passed to avoid detection by the rangers.
After ducking about four cars, a fifth came along and, as usual, we ducked into the cover of the dark woods. As we were hiding, we heard the car stop and a door open. We waited until we heard the door close and the car drive off and then we walked back onto the road. As soon as we were on the road a flashlight blinded us and from behind the flashlight a rangers voice commanded us to stop where we were. The ranger escorted us to police headquarters, way east of the park. After detaining us for a couple of hours, the ranger said that they would let us go, this time, with a warning because the jails were also full on that particularily busy weekend. Then the ranger told us that they were letting us go, but they said to us: "We'll let you go this time, but you are on our warning list. Do you know what will happen if we catch you again?" To which my friend promptly replied: "What, you'll put us on your double secret warning list?" We all cracked up, but the rangers didn't think it was so funny.

Hi Tom! Great story - Sneaky Rangers in Wisconsin back in the day. :)
I was at "The Lake" this past weekend - Didn't see a ranger outside the office the whole time. Didn't see any sign of clubbers either - there may be a correlation....

Yeah, everyone I know who used to go to Taylor's Falls has a story of the Rangers' tyranny, but most of it came from the MN side, where jumping the cliffs has been illegal for as long as I can remember.

Strange laws and enforcers, if I do say so. I still wonder why they even let us climb at all. The state seems to have trouble with anyone taking their own life into their own hands. Funny that they will punish us for trying to have a little fun...

In Princeton, MN, where I went to high school, the cops used to get on us for kicking the hacky-sack in the empty parking lots. So we'd stop and go sit around on the large pine tree potters on main street and they'd kick us off those too.

Not sure what exactly we were supposed to be doing with ourselves, but I suspect it relates to shopping. Needless to say, I was not shocked at the absurd commandment from Mr. Bush telling Americans that they must buy things in order to save the country from the evil terrorists...

It all works together so marvellously!!!

Ha ha ha,

Hi Bruce,
It's great to hear from you again.
Yeah, the guy who gave the wonderful smart ass comment to the rangers was Doug Gow. He was the usual partner of my brother Rob and I. Doug was very shy, that is, until he had a few libations in him, then he became really belligerent, especailly towards any type of authority. Another time, Doug, Rob and I were hiking in to Fort Snelling State Park. We had gear and were going to scale one of the old walls of the fort. A ranger came out of nowhere, as they have a habit of doing, and yelled to Doug, "where are you going with that rope?" To which Doug promptly replied, "Rope? What rope? Oh, this rope. Ah, boating, that's it, yes, boating."
Doug was a real crack up and he pulled down hard back in the day.

If you ever make it out to Colorado, you'll have to get in touch and we can get out and climb. I'd like to get together with some old DLFA affiliates and climb at TF or The Lake, if I ever make it back that way.
