| I've taken a 6-week beginner gym class, and now I want to climb outdoors. I've heard Devil's Lake is great, and I'm looking to climb only one day, either July 20, 21, or 22. I'm looking for a guide or a one day class that can get me on the rock. Any ideas? | |

| First thing I'd check is if you can find a class through a local community college. You may not find exactly what you're looking for, but they can be a bargain.
Second, I know Vertical Endeavors (St Paul, MN and Warrenville, IL) run classes to Devils Lake. Check their website.
I don't know who else guides up at DL. If they're doing it officially, they should be registered with the park, so you might try contacting the park to see if you can get a list.

| Sonja,
Just go to the lake, hit the east bluffs and yell, "hoop hoop!" You may then hear your call returned. Find the person who responded to your hoop and you'll know that you've found the right person to instruct you in the proper ways of climbing.

| DL in the summer can be a zoo on the weekends in many areas.
VEGA (VE's guiding group) does not look to be having any preset classes that weekend in DL. However, I bet if you were to want a private guide for a day one of their folks would be more than happy.
Other options: Climbingcentral.com lists C.L.I.M.B. Outdoors Inc. (877-ON-CLIMB) as a guiding service in the DL area. Their website does not look all that promising though.
Minnesotaclimbing.com - A bunch of MN folks, and a few cheeseheads ;) that are more oft than not open climbing w/ new folks. I'm an admin there and have climbed w/ a fair number of the people who frequent the site. Weekend trips to DL happen from time to time.

| Just wear a bikini top and look for the obviously experienced climbers. Free lessons! Works on me, anyway! | |
