| Hello. Is there an updated trail map anywhere for the approach to some of the less popular cliff bands at devils lake, wi? Many of the cliff bands are very easily located without much wandering across the boulders. I have the 2nd ed. of the "Climbing Devils Lake", but the approach to some smaller cliff bands, ex., the Siamese Buttress, is not clear to me. I know it's up there somewhere, but I'm reluctant to just carry all the gear with my 2 kids across the talus. I'm interested in finding the East of Quarry--groups. Are these rocks low-lying-just over the talus abutting the South Shore Dr. road? Or up higher on the bluff face? Thanks for any help. Ron L | |

| These crags in the more obscure ares of the Lake are great outings, however I advise you to plan on visiting them either in the late fall or early spring. At those times Swartling's Guide can be very helpful. All you have to do is ID one named crag and the rest can fall into place.
Bushwhacking is an issue along with rock hopping. Keeping a pack light is advisable as well. If you are going to TR I may recommend a very light rack as you will probaly end up slinging tress/boulders for anchors.
A favorite wall of mine is Poison Ivy. Many climbs at all levels. Say Cheese 5.10a and Portrait Corner 5.8 are among them. You also mentioned Kids. There are a number of climbs in the 5.4 - 5.6 range as well.
I might also suggest Alladin's Castle and White Wall as possibilities.
Again mid summer might not be the time to go to these special spots, but hey go for it if you want. | |

| Ron: I just read your original post and my response may have not answered your questions. As far as Siamese Buttress is concerned, you can best reach it by hiking up from south Shore Road. At one time you could park a smaller car below but the Park has made that difficult by placing boulders in that spot. You may have to park in the Sandstone turnout and walk back (west) for 300 yds tops. You will be able to see Siamese as the first outcropping as you walk. I believe the base of Siamese and Prayer Wall would be at about the same level as the Quarry floor. It is a little steep to scramble up and again this time of year the foliage and humidity can make the approach a little problematic. Hope this helps. | |
