Depends on how or where you start. If you make yourself start right under the nose you are right, but you can get way up on the problem starting to the right where it is then possible to reach the crack. That's why I said slightly contrived, the start is not obvious, or somewhat forced.
We are starting it sitting on a very obvious jug down and left of the nose. Makes it totally obvious and uncontrived, no way to reach the crack except to climb up and over the nose. We have also worked on starting it the way you described, sitting on the right, and that is contrived because you could easily reach the crack at a few points.
