Description This is one of the more popular walls here. It is probably all of only 35 ft or less, but it is great fun for the beginner climber. Many a climber has cut his or her climbing teeth here. It faces east. Some of these climbs can be led. For history buffs, there is an ancient bolt here. Who placed it and when? Long slings are necessary for top rope anchors here. Getting There This lies closest to Hammond Pond. It is probably best to park close to the south side of Hammond Pond. Then hike north along a dirt road. Take the right fork. This should put you below the crag.

The route has two variations, according to Boston Rocks guide. One ascends diagonally and one goes straight up vertically.About half way up the wall, you cross a giant horizontal crack which makes a pleasant resting spot. | I think this is the wall we used last evening for me to learn setting up a top rope and rappelling. My first time, it was a lot more fun than I thought and a lot less scary than I expected. I also climbed two routes here, but I am not sure of the names. Will have to research. Living so close to it, I think we'll be back more often - I loved the fact that there was no one else was there, no lines or waiting, very peaceful, and also easy for a beginner, good for me to learn with no pressure. |

| In the late '80s, Hammond Pond was the local climbing area for the Brandeis Outdoors and Mountain Club. The lower walls were great for top-roping and beginner trips. In the depths of winter, often at night, we'd also practice aid climbing the cracks using nuts and hexes. |

| I put a lot of mileage on these walls in the early '80s - as many as 20 to 30 laps per day - not including Alcove bouldering. A tucked-away gem in the middle of hectic, urban living. |
