Lost cam...reward!

I was with a group of 4 on Monday and was forced to leave behind one of my favorite cams on Cat in the Hat. Offset 2 near the top of pitch 3...so sad. Reward for getting it back to me!

Thanks,
Jen

What do you mean? My cam is stuck up there and I want it back...

Many people ask this question to figure out whether the gear was actually lost...or if it was actually "abandoned." These people will then likely claim that, if you made an effort to get it out yourself and failed (or if you didn't try to get it out at all), it's now "booty." The exception to this decades-old tradition is if you were forced to bail due to injury.

If it was a life threatning emergency then yeah I can see asking for your gear back but if it's stuck and you can't recover it you might as well accept it's gone to the person with more patience to unstick it. Sorry for your lose.

You lose! Why should someone retrieve your abandoned junk?

I won't be up CitH or Cookie Monster this weekend (tragically), but I can drop by the BLM camp site on Sunday and check the post board for any notes related to your cam (I'm assuming you've left Red Rocks and can't do the same for yourself).

Cheers.

Ah the usual tough crowd when it comes to booty. Jen, you started the request off okay but with your second post it went down hill. When asked about the reason there are some that will help with the cause, like with what was said here:

There are other exceptions that will garner a bit of help with the cause (at least with me) such as beginner climbers. Had you said

jenpyro wish she wrote:My cam is stuck up there and after trying my second who is a beginner had to leave it cause it was getting late and we did not want to get benighted. I was hoping someone would take pity and I could get it back...
But saying:

Ain't going to cut it. So at this point it is booty.

Ah. I'm a complete novice at this, having never lost gear before. I was in a group of four, but broken into two groups - it was supposed to be two leaders and two newbies. But the second leader needed me to take lead, so we turned into a group of 4, which lengthened our ascent. The newest newbie got scared and things were extended into nightfall. Wrapping in the dark turned out to be a big deal as well for the others and I could not spend more time getting it out than the bit I had. I didn't realize getting gear back was a big thing. I would appreciate it if someone did take pity and return it. Thanks to schaefer for the kind words and to Allen for the clear description of what's going on.

3 days later on the most popular climb in Red Rocks. I guarantee you that it's long gone or mangled beyond repair.

Ah, no kidding. This is exactly why you should not have been a leader. Apparently, none in your party should have been.

Would you just gas up and start a wood chipper, jamming branches into it indiscriminately if you had never used one before? What about a chain saw? How about motorcycles? Why is it that people think they can engage in a potentially dangerous activity (as a leader no less) while being a "complete novice"?

Oh yeah, thanks rock gyms!!

I wouldn't try the chainsaw and doubt I could get the motorcycle into the wood chipper even if I wanted to jam it in there.

No luck on the camp ground post boards, so sorry. All messages were related to finding climbing partners for the weekend.

Give her a break. She was making the comment about being a novice at asking for gear left behind not being novice climber. So yer arguments are specious. Especially, as MojoMonkey points out trying to jam a chain saw or motorcycle into a wood chipper sounds like a real noob idea.

You were noob at one time and bet you lost gear. Sounds like she took over when needed and got everyone up and out. Further, it sounds like she did try to retrieved the gear but could not and decided to move on rather than waste time and be further benighted. Sounds reasonable in my book and much better than most noobs.

Ugh I know, I manage to tape my fingers together and the presents always look like shit.

Someone should chuff on that dude above for chuffing on that chick. She lost a cam and got made fun of. We all move on.

No one I know would trade a reward of a bootied cam for a lesser reward, like a lame, warm 6 pack. Offering a reward for a found cam is pretty worthless.

Thanks for checking schaefer. And thanks again to Allen for the clarifications. Like he said, I was talking about being new at losing gear. I've been a leader for a while, but this is my first time losing gear. And I did leave it rather than spend more time because I needed to get my partly-scared party down safely in the dark. Dark doesn't bother me but not everyone feels that way. From all the leaders I've climbed with and talked to, this sort of thing is part of climbing, and that's ok. I was grateful to have the ability to get everyone up and down safely. Allen, if you're ever in RR let me know, you sound like a solid partner. Cheers everyone, have a good season.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
