I will be at residency interviews in the Boise area and am looking for a weekend partner to show me what Boise has to offer. Can be a muchacha or a man. I am seriously considering moving here and all-around climbing is a near-top criteria. Is the weather a total blow in Boise in December or do I have a chance? Thanks for anything you can throw at me.

What are you used to? December is likely good enough, if 40ish degrees, no wind and sunny on your particular days. At least that's about what feels okay to myself and my son, and more than a few others who've lived here awhile. Our local rock, the Black Cliffs, is well named, and warms up easily. We also have a local sandstone area that warms up, and is protected. It usually isn't snowy in mid December, or all that cold yet, but like anywhere, YMMV.

Good luck on the interviews! Helen

So, an update. Almost mid November, and it's just perfect in Boise this weekend. A bunch of locals headed out to City of Rocks for the weekend, should be mid to upper fifties, and coldish at night.

Next weekend, however, it's supposed to be only in the forties. Mid December, could be forties too.

Coming from Walnut Creek, it might be an adjustment for temperature, but I think you'll find you can play outside a heck of a lot here, since it's usually dry.

Feel free to PM, and I'll give you my son's phone so you can text him. He's the rope gun! Whatever the temp in December, we can get you out to check out the area, at any rate, and the gyms, too, if that's of interest.

There's also Swan Falls bouldering, which is lower and warmer.

PM if you have questions. I really love it here, but don't tell anyone! Idaho is sorta like a secret crag, only a bit bigger. Best, Helen

Hey Adam,

Weather right now is a bit questionable, could be sunny and 40 or rain/snow mix any given day this time of year. If it holds out while you're in town I'd be happy to go up to the Black Cliffs with you, and if not I've got gym passes so you could check out our local bouldering and roped gyms. It's been a while since I've roped up, been doing a lot of bouldering as of late, but I'm a competent lead climber/belayer (if you are into bouldering though, we have an awesome area about 45 minutes south of town that has some sort of weird weather shield around it and always seems to be mild even when the valley is getting hammered).

Fell free to PM me,
-Drew

Drew, I am assuming you are referring to Swan Falls. It's lower elevation drops it out of the inversions, even, the Snake River (big body of water) and all that rock helps moderate it, but yes, it is definitely a weird little climate pocket.
