Old bolts (?) located above fluffernutter.

Description

Small sandstone crag about 45 minutes from Knoxville that offers bouldering and trad lines up to 35 ft. Practically no approach with easy to moderate routes make this place great for new climbers or those that just want a quick afternoon session. Rock quality is great, though sometimes dirty, and the climbing here would be classic if the routes were only taller. Be proficient in natural anchor building, as there are not any bolts at Look Rock.

Look Rock is divided into two climbing areas: Lower Look Rock (Trad/TR) and Upper Look Rock (Bouldering). Lower Look Rock is situated below the main parking area, while Upper Lock Rock is directly below the observation tower. Area does not see much traffic from climbers, so there does not seem to be any official routes drawn up. If anyone has official documentation on routes, please comment. No permanent anchors to speak of, but there are plenty of bomber trees to use to build an anchor with. Most of the trees are set away from the cliff, so you'll need at least 50' of webbing to TR some routes. Due to the short nature of these routes, protecting the routes traditionally is possible for a few of the routes, but probably not recommended for most.

  • NPS is not crazy about folks climbing here, mainly due to past injuries from ignorant climbers that had no business climbing. If you do climb at Look Rock, enjoy it, but tread lightly!

Lower Look Rock:

From the parking lot, there are 3 unmarked trails that lead to the top of the cliff. Rap down to the base of the cliff, or take the left-most trail (the trail farthest from the official lookout spot) and walk to the bottom of the cliff.

Getting There

From Knoxville, Take 129 South toward Maryville. Turn left on Lamar Alexander Pkwy right before the Foothills Mall. Go about a mile, then turn right on Montvale Rd. Montvale becomes Happy Valley Road which will take you up the mountain. Merge left onto Flats road. Drive past Eagle Rock Retreat Center and keep driving up hill. Turn sharp left on Butterfly Gap Rd. Turn left on FootHills Parkway. Main top-rope wall is below main parking via a few obvious unmarked trails. Rap down, or walk east to the bottom of the cliff line, then back west to the start of the climbs. Go up paved trail across from parking lot to the Look Rock tower. Bouldering is below directly below tower.

Follow finger crack to top. Good practice for crack technique, unfortunately it's so short. For best practice, try not to use the tree!...[more]   Browse More Classics in TN

We top roped like 10-12 routes and bouldered about the same around 6-8 years ago while my wife was finishing up at UT and found it pretty fun and easy to set up. This a perfect little crag if you're visiting the Townsend/Cades Cove side of the Smokies.

There is an old-school topo with all the "proper" route names floating around somewhere, so some of the current route names listed here are temporary until the correct names are dug up.
