Longs Peak area accidents

Yesterday, I was on the Longs Peak trail, taking my local host (Dennis Lee) up to Mt. Meeker via the Loft. It was a great day, but there were two disturbing incidents that we noticed:

  • About a mile up the trail (we left the trailhead at 2:10 AM), we saw lights headed down the trail (never a good thing at that hour, as that often has 'epic' written all over it). There was a woman, and a man; the man looked like he was in pain, had his right foot taped up. I asked if he was okay, he said 'no.' They were brief, they said that they had been climbing the Yellow Wall...I assume that he fell or otherwise injured himself, but they offered no details. They also declined help from us.
  • After returning to the trailhead at a little after noon, we were signing the day use register, and I noticed a note posted on the board. I'm not sure if it was real or not, but it clearly read, "Sara, I broke my leg and am headed to the hospital...Chris Sharma"

I just wanted to post this and find out if anyone knew anything more? Be careful out there!

If it was a broken leg I can only imagine the retreat off the wall was a nightmare.

I overheard Sharm talking about Bishop after the OR Comp, so I doubt it was him on Long's. Anyone have any better info??
Hey, also, if anyone in in the SE and wants to hit up either Tenn Wall or some of my local (NC) stuff, let me know...I'm getting kinda burned from my current partners.
Later all.

Sorry to hear about that Sean, I was concerned, but they were less than a mile from the trailhead, and they seemed to want to just get down. I hope Erik is okay, and I wish a speedy recovery to him.

Did those guys leave a rope fixed on the last Crack of Delight rappel? I found a fixed line there today Tuesday, August 14. I hiked it out and would be glad to return it....

HI JIM,
We heard from a friend that you were inquiring about the yes, "epic" we had on the Diamond this past Sunday. It sure was nice of you to have wondered how we were doing, or I should say how Erik is doing. On Broadway at about 5:30pm we were pulling rope and pulled down many loose computer size rocks. They came flying down on Erik and one big one bounced off his foot, completely splitting his shoe and shredding a toe. We finished the rappel and got back to our bivy sight with a bone and flesh completely exposed. A man named Michael was guiding a guy with post polio syndrome and happened to be around to help. He helped us cover and clean the wound. He gave us his trekking poles, thank god and gave us a camel back. We started to hike. After we made it around Chasm lake another party who had rope stuck, caught up with us and carried a rope back for me and made a phone call to my folks. (Thanks guys.) 11 hours later we made it to the trail head, 4 am. We called an ambulance because one, the car keys were in our other pack that we left behind up at our bivy and two, Erik wasn't doing so well, bleeding a lot. Eventually he ended up at St. Anthony's in Denver and had part of his second big toe amputated due to a "farm" like accident fracture. Luckily, only one toe. Nothing else broken in the foot just very swollen and bruised. He's out of the hospital and doing well. It sure could have been much worse. Thanks again for your concern.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
