| I was there last year. I actually stumbled upon the varying 60-80 ft tall cliff while hiking around on the portion of the AT that runs around the campground. Lucky for me, I had some gear with me and was able to set up a TR in a few places. Decent, but nothing to write home about. On the other hand, it was a family camping trip and I didn't really have much time to scrutinize the whole thing. It reminded me somewhat of LSM cliffs a little further north. Looked like the same kind of "greenstone". The stuff was kinda chossy and crumbly- at least the sections I looked at were. But, if you're going up there for a casual weekend, as you mentioned, the campground with amenities is great, and if you happen to get a site on the crag side of the campground you can literally spit off the cliff from a few of the sites. A clear autumn sunset from the top of the cliff is awesome as well. I'll probably go again sometime. I found the easiest approach to the base was either rapping from a tree at the top, or heading down the gully (climber's left) of the crag. I think it's cool that someone posted this as an area. If anyone else has any info on the quality of the rock for placing gear or has tried it, I'd love to hear from you. I saw a few lines that were possibly bolt-worthy, but I'm not a bolter (meaning I have seen more than my share of heated ethics debates and choose not to put up sport routes). Then again, it's a moot point because it's in SNP and thus untouchable. Thanks for posting though. Good stuff. |
