It was bone dry today. A little bit of snow at the top, but no reason to go through the snow.

I did it a week ago, very little snow that you could either walk across or go around.

I am assuming that the summer trailhead is open.
I don't think my little car (Kia Rio) would make it past the winter TH, would it ?
What's the likelihood of getting a ride from there?
Is there a way to lessen the 3 miles on foot?

If you're careful it will, but you'll scrape the undercarriage a few times. There are a few narrow steep stretches where you'll have to back up if you meet an oncoming car, whereas a higher clearance vehicle could just maneuver part way off road and the two cars could pass.

There is at least one point along the road where you could pull over and park if you aren't comfortable continuing.
14ers.com is a good source for info on this sort of thing.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
