Jordan Rock Climbing

Jordan is a country full of history and wonder. The local people are generally extremely hospitable and helpful. The weather is similar to the rest of the Middle East - the best time to visit is fall, winter or spring.

The local currency is the Jordanian Dinar (JD), which in November 2021 was about $1.41 US = 1 JD.

As of late 2021, US citizens needed a visa to visit Jordan. The visa can be obtained in advance from the Jordanian Consulate in Washington DC or likely upon arrival at the airport. Look at purchasing a Jordan Pass ( jordanpass.jo/Default.aspx) if you are going to places like Petra and Wadi Rum. Buying the Jordan Pass while still in the US should waive the visa fee.

The most famous rock climbing in Jordan is at Wadi Rum in the southern part of the country, but there is also climbing near the Dead Sea and in the north near the cities of Jerash & Irbid. There's also a large, modern climbing gym in Amman (Climbat).

British Climbers Tony Howard and Di Taylor have written several guidebooks for Jordan that were published by Cicerone Press in the UK. The guides are now quite outdated (last published in 1997), but for route descriptions of classic routes (Merlin's Wand, The Beauty, et al), the books still work fine.
