Hi, I´m from Spain and I´d like go to Dead Horse Point State Park for climbing, because the view from there is one of the most photographed scenic vistas in the world; But, I don´t know if is possible and if there is any pitch there?

There isn't much climbing right at Dead Horse Point. However most photographed does not always mean most scenic because it also usually means that it's easily accessed. You can find equally (or better) magnificent views and fantastic tower climbing just a few miles down the road in Canyonlands NP.

Climbing is not allowed in DHSP unless you get special permission which they normally only give out to film crews with lots of money.

Dream of Dead Horses is an outstanding grade IV, and there is little chance that anybody sees you until you pull over the top.

The trick is the approach. It is a long hike up from the Potash road. I have always approached by rapping from the rim. Nine years ago I went back with 2 friends, and a third to drop us off and pick us up.
It was strange because at 5:30 am there was a big commotion about a mile away and 1,000' down.
A helicopter was chasing a stagecoach being pulled by 6 horses.

Probably one of those film companies, a Wells Fargo commercial perhaps?

I talked to Ron Kauk about Mission Impossible II being shot there. He said Cruise did all his own stuntwork so he must like exposure. I could tell that it was shot on several sides of the point including a dihedral on the west side that I scoped out before climbing the SSE buttress on 3/1/78.

Even back then the point had claimed 4 lives, including a boy scout chasing a lizard and also the sister of the park superintendent in a suspicious incident with a low life husband.

It is a cool place, especially after a snow storm.

Ron. Are you advocating illegal climbing?

The mission impossible crew sprayed bolts all over the rock over the rim. Plastic holds and all.

Climbing was banned after somebody in the Dept. read Earl Wiggens' account of my finish in Canyon Country Climbs.

A specious reason at best.
If the authorities institute capricious and arbitrary regulations then they deserve to be broken.

And I doubt that it was the MI2 crew and more likely the silly IMAX thing with Nancy Feagin that left the bolt on holds and such.

Ah. The ranger told me it was the MI thing. Sure looks like Tom is pulling on face holds but whatever.

I do disagree with the climbing ban too. How do you feel about illigal BASE jumping?

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
