The Thaiwand hosts several fine multi-pitch routes as well as moderate single-pitch routes. There are spectacular views of the peninsula.
The crag faces north and is always in the shade. The crag can be accessed at high tide.
Getting There
Get yourself to Railay West beach. As you're looking out at the ocean walk to your left to the end of the beach. There will be a trail that goes up through the forest. To get to the Thaiwand, follow the trail and when the trail branches always take a right. You'll eventually get to a steep section with a fixed rope. Follow that and after about 100ft you'll see a bamboo ladder when you reach the wall. The hike takes about 15 minutes.
Beautiful, stunning route on spectacular orange overhanging limestone. Climbs up through some difficult reachy pulls on overhanging stone, culminating with a cruxy rightward traverse to some jugs. Super continuous and pumpy. Pictured on the cover of the King Climbers Guide book....[more]
Much confusion is in the name of this wall. We originally dubbed it "The Thaiwand", like the "Eiger-wand" cus it looms over the bay like the Eiger's north wall, and after a few too many drinks at the Sunset Bar, it made sense. King's older guidebook called it the "Thaiwand Wall", and that stuck... though it has been even taken even further to the "Taiwan Wall".
To call it the Thaiwand Wall is redundant, like saying The Al Quaida.... but who really cares... it's the big-ass tower at the south end of Railay Beach.
The route name "Getting to Know You", like "Etc, Etc, Etc", is from the original version of "The King and I."
