Description
Old Red Rock is a long escarpment lying 100-200 m above the Tang Lang River on the east side. Only four walls on the escarpment have been developed. Most of the terrain remains to be explored.
Getting There
Access is easiest from the bridge to Lan Ni Tian village, about 1 km below the diversion dam. If your climbing objective is Old Red Rock, have the driver stop at this bridge instead of going up to the other crags. The Lan Ni Tian bridge is also the monsoonal access to Splash Wall, Orange Face, and Cave Crag. For Old Red Rock, cross the bridge and follow the road as it climbs steadily up, past La Ni Tian Village, traversing the east slope of the valley (don’t make the left turn into the village; keep straight on the steadily-climbing road as it heads up valley). This road is access to a defunct gravel mine, where it ends about 1 km from the bridge. The gravel mine is at the northern end of the escarpment. Just before a split on the road near the gravel mine, drop onto a well-used trail that soon winds through a dry drainage and skirts the northern edge of the escarpment. This is a remnant of the Ancient Tea and Horse Path between Kunming and Sichuan. There are four developed faces of this large escarpment.
