so i went snowboarding in dec of last year b 4 x mas. i tried carving on a turn downhill and fell straight on my ass. my right wrist got in the way. thought i sprained it. didnt go to the docter til 2 or 3 months later, had x rays, showed nothing. a chiropractor of mine put all the bones back in place, ive worked with him since and its about 80% better. dont know if i broke or just sprained it but its taken about 6 months to heal. climbing helps emmensly but what else could i do?

Looking down from Notchtop

Physical therapy would help a lot as well. Some weighted excercises might be a part of that therapy. I would see a PT and at least get one evaluation.

Chelsea,

Get a Dyna-Flex Pro Gyro. http://www.dynaflex-intl.com/flash_site/sportsgyros.html It is a tennis ball sized gyroscope that spins at 9000 RPM and generates 25 pounds of force.

You can go through the range of motions including overhead to simulate climbing muscle use. At first, it was hard for me to figure out how to get it started...I was about ready to return it. Once you get the motion it is easy to start.

Also, try arnica gels as a topical sports cream. Arnica is great for sprains and strains but doesn't stink like other sports creams. A good brand is made in Boulder-try their Arnica Plus http://www.peacefulmountain.com/02_products/arnica.php

PT with a certified hand therapist would be best.

A 2006 photo of me at the top of "Lizards and Scorpions with Blue Sky and Clouds on Tuesday" or some other crazy route name. Nice view from the rim though. Image by Joseffa Meir.

Been dealing with a similar injury- GET THE MRI!

At first I thought mine was sprianed, then I went in and they found one fracture and an avulsion (where a ligament pulled chunks of bone off). GOing to a specialist, he saw the second fracture and ordered an MRI, but only after it still hurt after the fracture was healed.
Now it turns out there is a lot more damage than that- torn meniscus, damaged cartledge...

Should have had the surgery when I was already laid-up, but now I'm facing a wrist that won't heal, but another 3+ months of incapacitation if I try to fix it...

There is a lot more than bone in the wrist, and fractures can be the LEAST of your problems.

wow, that is familiar, so sorry to hear that. how did you injure it? they told me to get an mri after i saw a pt. i would have had to get surgery but my chiropractor; whom iv known my whole life, works on ligaments and other stuff most chiro's dont. he said all the bones were crushed in one place on top of a fracture. i feel your pain.

hope you heal fast. everyone told me to keep from climbing when it's the only thing healing b/c its stretched out and getting worked on when i push up on mantles. ironic.

Noah's first rope...kinda.

I fell about 10 feet headfirst into a hole between some boulders on March 1st and only my wrists kept me from a broken neck. They thought I had broken my navicular bone in my right wrist but the xrays came back clear and I just had to wear splints for a couple weeks. Still some residual stretched ligaments but I am back to 100% for the most part. Lot's of construction work was my PT, and taping helps when climbing hard stuff. Regular pushups still hurt but I can do them on my knuckles just fine.

The magic potion for me was a topical anti-inflammatory called Topricin, which contains arnica and a bunch of other herbs....best stuff I have ever used. I rubbed it into my wrists daily for about a month. Now I use it for any aches and find it much more effective than ibuprofen.

Good luck with your recovery.

A full speed running jump- landed on ice in kleats... I whiped out like a train wreck onto frozed ground- naded on one hand bent funny, then rolled over it. Nobody is sure exactly what motion or stress/impact broke it. Likely several events within that second.

The MRI's show the fluid in the join leaking out, down into the forearm- I'm running the engine without oil. It seems likely that the torm meniscus/capsule is in there, propping open a gap. Also, at the outside edge of the hand, in the carpels bewteen the pinky and arm, the wrist is "floppy" which is to say, the palm is usually "lower" than the arm if placed palm down on a table. mine is too, until I push on it- then the bones in the arm "pop" out of place and contact the table. Twisting and applying pressure, or pinching things with a tilted wrist are out of the question and can be excruciating. I can crip at "full strength" (minus the 1" loss of size from atrophy) on dead horizontal holds over my head, but not at angles, etc..
I find myself doing hand-switch after hand switch just to stay on routes. It got better by increments for a while, but seems to be at a plateau now, if not going backwards. I'm afraid I might be grinding things down in there.

After a day of climbing, the next day the whole system feels bruised and fatigued ont he inside... like the end of the radius and ulna bones are sore... I suppose I'm feeling the meniscus swelling up.

No good. No good at all.

Needless to say, I'm NOT climbing hard right now, but I also don't want to spend July/August back in splints... Got to go see more docs, get more opinions, etc...
