I am looking for places to climb from March 11-15 that might be void of snow. I know where to climb in Southeast Idaho (Southern facing basalt cliffs). But, I am on the other side of the state and would be looking at possibly Black Cliffs in Boise, City of Rocks, Slick Rock in McCall, etc. Just trying to get a feel for what faces, given decent weather, might be clear in March.
I live 30 minutes from the City and was climbing a 5.10a/b on the Dungeon last Tuesday. Of course, that was before today's big storm. I'm sure by March things will be melted out more than they are now. There is still snow between the sagebrush, but the rock was dry and temps were in the upper 40's. I'd bet the West face of Bath Rock and West side of the Breadloaves are going to be quite pleasant, depending on daytime temps. Another not so secret place that is a good secret is Massacre Rocks State Park. You can almost climb year round there. I lived/worked for the park for a year back in 2006. You'll find a great climbing guide on the ISU outdoor program web site. Drop me a line if you need a pard. I think I have that week free. Kevin
Howdy. I live in Boise and I climb on The Black Cliffs all Winter, if it's sunny out. Lately a few other folks have been venturing out, though not many.
Thank you for the suggestions. I can climb in the 40's, maybe high 30's on a sunny day without my hands freezing. Sounds like I have some good choices! I appreciate the input. Kevin, i'll let you know if I need a partner while there.
