Ice climbing in anywhere south of anchorage?
|
My wife and I are going on our honeymoon to Alaska, leaving December 24. Just wondering if there is anywhere we could set up a top rope and ice climb? We are staying in Kenai but have unlimited miles on our rental car. |

Hour and a half north to Moose Pass (Victor Creek) is your best option. Hour and a half south to Homer depending on conditions. I'll be traveling during that time otherwise I'd offer to meet up with you. Seward (further on past Moose Pass) has some climbs too. Have fun! |

Oh, I forgot Ninilchik. It's about 40 miles south of you, in between Kenai and Homer. There will definitely be ice all along the beach bluffs. |

Thanks for your reply! I was just browsing the website you posted. Really great stuff. Very excited to ice climb in Alaska. I've only had the pleasure of climbing the ice in Munising, Michigan. |

Assuming you are flying into Anchorage, you can buy 2nd hand crampons and axes at The Hoarding Marmot in the Spenard area. |

No promises of ice on the bluffs of the Kenai, they need a good cold spell. Homer has some fun moderates on the bluff with access from the top. |

They face directly south and capture every bit of sunlight that comes their way, not to mention they are also directly on Kachemak Bay which is the warmest location of the peninsula. Ninilchik beach ice climbs face north west and will be consistently climbable barring some weird weather event. |

Well, we get a whole extra day now to go climb stuff closer anchorage! Any recommendations? |

Really excited to check out both. Been reading a ton. It seems like we'll be able to find a few climbs. Very excited. |
