Dotted Hawthorn on the hike to the highlands

Description

The Horizon Area is in my opinion is the poster child bouldering area for GHSP. This place is beyond picturesque and is what most people who have visited GHSP refer to when speaking of Grayson. Ponies, highball bouldering, and views for miles.

This is not however the best, or most numerous bouldering area (in terms of numbers of problems) that GHSP has to offer, where in several other areas have far more boulders, and are far more accessible than the Highland Area. That being said, you simply have to hike up and boulder in the Highlands at least once during your visit to GHSP.

Getting There

From the Massy gap parking lot, follow the trail up the field, through the gate, and up the winding trail to the top of the steep hill. At the top, continue to the obvious, proud, megalithic rocky outcroppings.

Horizon Line V6  VA : Grayson Highlands State Par... : ... : Horizon Boulder
This may be the proudest line in the park:you can see this line from a mile (from the road) or from over 7 miles off (from the hikes around Mount Rogers and surrounding areas) as it proudly overlooks a large chunk of the park, and miles and miles of the Blue Ridge Mountains. this problem is tall, windswept, exposed, and classic as hell. Horizon Line stand starts at the bottom of the middle of the face on a side pull and small crimp. toss out right to gain two small, shallow,angle-cut finger "poc...[more]   Browse More Classics in VA
