I'm visiting Big Bear with my son the week of June 25th and would like to get some climbing in. Am wondering if there are any guide books available for the area. Also, is there anywhere either in Big Bear or in the north San Diego area to rent a crash pad, my son is more into bouldering.
Hidden Treasures East is the current guidebook for the area (though it's not great imho), but there is also a small section for Holcomb Valley Pinicles (the main attraction at Big Bear) in the Southern California Sport Climbing book, though this book is much worse than Hidden Treasures East. As far as the crash pad thing goes, sorry, I'm no help there.
If you plan on bouldering the guidebook wouldn't be much help in my opinion. There are tons of cool problems in the area though. I spent two days wandering around Pinnacles South with a pad. Bring a brush, you might even find a line that hasn't been done before. Lots of potential here.
