Hips rubbed raw after 1.5 days on the wall

I recently did an aid-solo with hauling and my hips were bruised and even the skin rubbed raw after only a day and a half of being in the harness. I have the black diamond big wall harness. Was the harness too tight? Too lose? Too high up? Do you guys ever put extra padding between yourself and the harness?

The black diamond big gun despite their marketing it as a bigwall harness is certainly NOT a bigwall harness unless you're intending to speed wall.

You gotta harden the fuck up, bro. Your First Ascentionist wore a swami belt.

Ha! Couldnt help myself, I guess, given History. And experience. Sorry, Justin. Pay no mind if you think l'm an ass. Sincerely, keep up the hard work! It makes you a better person overall. And Yates makes a good product.

Hauling sucks. Jugging the same pitch you just aid soloed sucks. I free climb short multipitch routes, and my shit gets sore! This sport is just a world of hurt, mang!

Some thoughts from a lifetime spent wearing very heavy tool belts - creases and wrinkles in clothing under the tool belt/ swami are often the cause of hot spots. Humidity doesn't help. You could try "padding" the hot spots with coach tape. Try flat band underwear, it might help. I find that it does on days I've got a lot of weight in the belt. Friction causes heat & friction doesn't happen without movement; I've kept my tool belt ridiculously tight for years, not allowing much movement of belt relative to torso and generally have very few hot spots. Finding a harness without any edges on the inside may be what you need, just like minimizing seams inside of shoes. My wall harness is a Metolius Waldo, and I've never had problems with it.

Justin, are you 100% that you had clothing between your harness and your skin 100% of the time? I find I need to wear extra long shirts when aid climbing to make sure this is so. Otherwise I get rubbed raw.

Try BodyGlide. Works great for eliminating hotspots/friction. Apply every few hours.

^ this....bodyglide was invented for cyclists, they put it on the chamois and their nether regions where rubbing is guaranteed ....also runners use it for their nipples

Body glide is awesome. I've always done the Band-Aid rout for runner's nipple prevention but I might have to try body glide... Not a bad idea.

I've used every bigwall harness out there and the Yates shield is by far the most comfortable.. I did a twelve day solo of tribal route with it and no rubbing issues. Bruises from the weight yesbut rubbing hot spots no.

+1 for body glide, note it comes in a handy small compact size and a large deodorant size. By both but travel with the small one when weight and space count, use the more economical large one to refill the small one.

Tape some foam on your harness where it would rub your hips. Soloed Zodiac with Petzl Calidris without any problems.

+1 for the Waldo. Haven't hung forever on a big wall in one but for setting routes they're great. Think hours aiding around under the gym's lead arch with buckets of holds etc. The padding is YUGE and the gear loops can hold 1,000,000,000 pounds.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
