Im going to Georgia for a week or two starting January 12. I will be in Covington. Where should i go and what is better for the area bouldering or sport climbing. I dont have a climbing partner down there so i would need to meet up with someone or just boulder. Any info appreciated. Thanks

sand rock

Georgia is pretty limited. Mt Yonah has some decent routes. The lowers are short single pitch well bolted and vary between 5.6 to 5.11. The upper main face has mostly 2 pitch routes between 5.6 to 5.11. The main face stays wet for days after a rain but the sun hits it all day so it stays warm. Curreah Mt (not sure I spelled that right) is suppose to be good with some trad and sport routes. Tallulah Gorge(once again not sure I'm spelling that correct) is all multi pitch trad routes. From what I have read it is extremely difficult. If your up for bouldering Boat Rock is top notch. And if you cant find anything Atlanta has the largest indoor facility in the nation Stone Summit. 65 ft lead walls up to 5.14 large bouldering room. Hit me up if cant find anyone. I might interested in meeting up and climbing.

Rocktown is some of the best bouldering in the whole south. Go there

Myself placing a a blue/yellow offset MC to protect between Bolt 2/3 just post crux .

Picture credit goes to eric Singleton, and many thanks to Josh Bagget for the great belay.

pretty much nailed up top...the only thin i'll add in tallulah is that the climbing isnt difficult the access is. Call ahead and tell the rangers you've visited before and wondering if they are allowing people down into the gorge. Be super nice and friendly...they deal with a lot of people who shouldnt be venturing down into the gorge and there has been a death recently (last three years or so). Its a state park so plan accordingly. It has great climbing as long as its 50 and below. The wall bakes

^ didnt read the above. not much bolted in tallulah. Curahee has enough sport lines for a few hours. not a spectacular cliff but if its what you got. Good history there as well

Rocktown. Go to boat rock if you want to feel like you're dying in a fire.

Spooky dude. You're going to be in my old home town on my birthday. Better you than me.

If you have the time, go to Rocktown. If you're short on time, go to Boat Rock. If you have a whole weekend, blow them both off and go to HorsePens40 (probably my favorite bouldering in the US, and I've been around)

Boat Rock is pretty sharp textured rock. Bouldering on granite eggs. But if you're into that style, very good and unusual for the TN/AL/GA area where it's more typically relatively large positive edges on bullethard sandstone. If you're familiar with bouldering in Bishop, the style in Rocktown would be more like the Happies/Sads with Boat Rock being more like the Buttermilks (bear with me people, of course the scenery and scale in Boat Rock is a joke compared to the Milks, but sharp holds on granite eggs with very technical climbing vs. steeper cranking on larger positive holds is accurate).

Boat Rock will keep you busy for a visit or three. Rocktown could keep you busy for weeks.

I was pretty bummed when they didn't greenlight my "Bourne Identity" style reboot of The Eiger Sanction. This was from the rough draft's first act.

First off, Tallulah is awesome if you enjoy trad and the grades are on par with any place in the south developed in that time period! Boat Rock and Rocktown are the two most visited bouldering areas and are very fun. But, GA is littered with boulders! If you look hard enough, you will find them. A little hint... Growing up at the southern tip of Gwinnett county and roaming the woods all around the area including Rockdale, Walton, East Dekalb, and Newton, I remember seeing many boulders. Of course, most are not concentrated. But still fun to mess around without anyone around. Oh, it is bow season for some of these counties until the end of the month. If you are really in to scenery and high quality bouldering, check out Cooper's Gap. About 30-40 problems cleaned so far, many more to be cleaned, at the southern tip of the Appalachians, and on a clear day can see the highrises of Atlanta across the horizon! About a 2.5 hour drive from Covington though. While Stone Summit may be closer to you, if you want a gym in the Atlanta area that will be on par with outdoor grades and not packed full with plastic monkeys, go to Adrenaline in Suwanee!
