Harz/Harzvorland Rock Climbing

This is the home of granite cracks and slabs, in the middle of Germany. These non-typical German granite formations take on some fantastic forms which scream to be climbed. The routes are most often slabby and less demanding in technical difficulty. However, a know-how of property use of trad gear is necessary, as there is little bolted protection.

There is some great granite bouldering here too, if that's what you're looking for.

And though not technical within the area of the Harz, but just a tick northwest of it, there is a sandstone crag. It is called the Bodensteiner Sandsteinklippen. If you're tired of granite and/or slab, you can come here for some more vertical sandstone.

As an alternative to climbing, I would recommend a hike up the Brocken (1141 m) which is the highest point in the Harz. Here, you will see a remnant of the division line between former East and West Germany. Furthermore, if you're here on a typically foggy day, you won't get to enjoy much of a view, but you will be treated to one of the phenomena of this mountain, a Brocken Spectre
