Grand Valley Climbing in Grand Junction is raising their rates

FYI they are doing a rate increase. I sure hope they use the extra money to hire some setters. After someone at the desk told me about the increase yesterday, I said the above statement, and he said "we change the routes often enough". I decided to do a walk through of routes (not boulder problems) and this is what I found. 143 total routes on Aug 30th 49 were set in April 14 were set in March 1 was set in Feb 45% of the routes are from April or before....and it will be September tomorrow. Is this common among the industry to have this low of turnover? I have been a member of 3 front range gyms and the standard was about 12 weeks max.

No, this is not common at all. In fact, that is totally bunk! The Circuit has 45,000 sq ft and they manage to have a 12 week max.

To Carlos: I pay about 60 dollars a month for Momentum in Salt Lake. I get access to 3 huge gyms, and it is almost impossible to climb all the routes. But GJ (I grew up there) has a huge propensity to spawn monopolies. So not sure there is much you can do. Burn it down?

I just cancelled my membership and took off to The Red. I have tried to give feedback but they know they have a monopoly.

I was tired of lunge/high step routes anyway. Although Charles sets some good ones....

Wait, you dont like huge lunge moves??

Isnt the best way to make a route harder by just subtracting foot hold??

Anyway, quick story about the owner which might shed some light on how it's run.

I knew my company was going to do the waterproofing on the job. Being that I like supporting the community I called him and told him I would do the job for material cost only ($3,000) in exchange for me bringing my daughters there a couple times a year. I live an hour away and have my own wall at home. I personally never go to gyms so I really wouldn't be there much. He said he wasn't interested!! I ended up charging him full price through my GC ($10,000). So he spent $7,000 more instead of letting my 3 daughters climb there 2-3 times a year!! Interesting business move in my opinion....

The money it is for the bank account, not for hiring more employee or paying more when it is not necessary. the peoples they will still pull your old plastic climbing rocks, desperate for distraction from cold winter suffering, and cycle of suffering samsara in their own lives. you go to joes valley, hueco tanks, cold winter flashing and you are achieving in nirvana.

What is happening yes with the gym in Eagle, CO, that was "opening summer 2016" and is not open? now website says opening 2017 ... :( I would very much like pull mightily on their own rocks winter 2016-2017.

Yeah that too. But my complaint here was not that most of the routes aren't worth doing, it was that they don't reset them nearly often enough.

If you want to make excuses for them for having a ton of routes up for 5 and 6 months, so be it. But in the spring, the excuse must have been "Its Winter and gym use is low." Maybe gym use would be higher if they ran a better gym. It has potential, but is sorely lacking.

Kinda like the gear shop, stopping day care on a 4 day notice and don't get anyone started on the yoga fiasco.....
And I heard Rob P stopped setting routes a year ago.

What yoga fiasco? All I know is over a week ago I went in to do a system and campus board workout because there weren't fresh routes and they had the pads pulled into the yoga room for Acro, or some BS like that.

Buy some more pads if that is what they need.

I'm not defending the gym, just trying to understand the reason for the slow down in new routes.

You seem to be really disappointed in this gym, you post about it quite a bit.
