To be fair, i make fun of everyone wearing a GoPro, no matter the sport.

I'm speculating that it's because GoPro videos of climbers are awful. Who wants to look at rock and the occasional hand? I've used a helmet mounted GoPro for taking pictures of others, but nothing else useful.

It's climbers and people who climb! Why is it no one ever says BITD we were hardcore mountain bikers because of the gear we had and these punk ass kids these days with their fancy long travel bikes ain't shit. Slow riders do get on my nerves when riding A Line at Whistler but the ego of MTBers pales in comparison to climbers

It’s because the gopro is such a “misused” devise. They are really great for what they are good for. I know, I own one, and use it all the time, but I still cringe every time I see someone wearing one on their helmet top roping a 5.6. I’ll never verbalize my feelings, because it’s just like, my opinion man. If they’re stoked on their shaky 35 minute unedited POV footage, then who am I to judge.
The gopro is a really great camera for climbing. One of its biggest selling points would be durability. I dropped mine 120ft. It survived with a small crack in the case, still 100% functional. I can’t say the same if I dropped my canon rebel.
Here are just a few shots Ive taken with a go pro

I make fun because, to me, it says, "I'm doing this to show my friends". My adventures are for me and those I'm experiencing them with in the moment, not for internet friends to look at later.

Most of the videos using gopros are bad and show the camera repeatedly hitting the wall. Not all of them I know of a few that are really cool from some free soloers.

I think gopro's aren't any good for slow sports. It's like wearing one when playing golf.

Sports that are fast and exciting make for some sick footy, bro.

Half an hour of your hands trying to find a sequence isn't riveting viewing. Even ice is lame when you view it. It's just the camera getting buried in spindrift and the occasional chuck o ice.

I don't own one, but I plan on getting one because I'm a badass skier who needs to let the world know.

I like mine for still shots, the wide angle lens does a great job of capturing everything. But, yeah, climbing videos are generally lame unless you're great at editing.

This. haha!!

I only take my contour out when it's like an 8-9 on fun like a knee deep backcountry day etc.

I always laugh when I see people filming their icey grom day.

Wait, what? I thought that was the only reason anyone climbed...

I agree with you. It's hard to tell a slope angle from a POV cam so even if you're ripping the steeps it looks like you're coming off the magic carpet.

I don't like leaving my SLR outside in the cold unattended for timelapses and GoPros actually do a reasonable job at them. POV has its place in a well edited video, but don't show me 10 mins of you slipping down a coolie and expect a fist bump.

Plus, ya know, footy for da boyz eh?

I have a Gopro. It was a wedding gift and I have yet to use it on a climb. But personally, if and when I do, it would not be used to post sweet vids on facebook or share my rad adventures with my less adventurous friends. It would be for the same reason i take a picture while outdoors. It would be to capture a fun time I'm having with my wife or a close friend to look back at a later date and trigger those fond memories.

However, your viewpoint is kinda why I havent used it yet. I share your lament of narcissistic behavior.

I've worn it once, footage is, as others have said, marginal at best. It's probably best used like another posted demonstrated: for still shots. However, I couldn't care less what other people whisper about me if/when I wear it. I've been climbing <1 year so I'm sure if they're not ripping me for my camera they're doing it for my technique or something else.

The big problems with GoPro POV climbing footage, particularly when helmet mounted:

  • the wide angle of the GoPro lens creates a lot of barrel distortion - this is amplified greatly the closer the cam gets to the subject.
  • when climbing, we move our heads, a *lot* - hence the huge quantity of nausea-inducing climbing video.

I think GPs have their place in climbing, but not for head mounted POV for the most part.

If you have a Gopro you're Nopro?

Base jumping footage is pretty awesome...

Greg t: Nice photos and I agree - GoPros are great for wide-angle quick shots. Of course you can't see what you are taking photos of, so take lots. But for movies, very tough to get a good climbing video. Really, short videos should tell a story, not just have clips of climbing, skiing, etc. and that is what most people do.

No matter what sport people laugh at you for using them. I dont care I always have it with me. Its good to pull stills from it and I like to take a day of climbing and turn it into a 5 minute video telling a story from that day.

Not trolling, serious question...though I already know what this will devolve into.

Why does it seem like the use of gopros while climbing is different from most other "adventure" activities? A lot of my other hobbies I see gopros and people dont freak out, but when I see a climber with a gopro it is met with whispers, jokes, and stereotypes? Just crossed my mind recently.

I have my own postulations, but I'd rather here what others think.

Why does it seem different than other adventurous activities, you ask? Well how much intrest do you have vested in those other activities? How much time do you spend in those other activities' forums? I'm sure that has something to do with your perception.

There are judgmental people in all groups of life. And personally, I think you care more about climbing and so you happen notice much more, again, just my perceived notions.

I hope I'm not coming off too strong and hope you don't feel like I'm attacking you.

I use my GoPro a lot. For hiking, camping, long drives, night sky time lapses and definitely for climbing. I picked up the hobby (photography) during middle school, studied it in college, held an internship after and immediately landed a job after school. If rather not try and justify why I do as that's what the forum topic is about but after reading the posts in it, it naturally I took it personal ha.

I think the fact it's met with such distain in this community is because quite frankly, there are a lot of people who are just dickheads. And If those same mindsets manifest themselves at your local climbing areas, than its really no wonder.

If you want to use your GoPro, who cares what they say about it. It's just like climbing rocks, you do it ultimately because you want to and enjoy it and in the end Its what it should be about.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
