the deniers immediately say "oh, the climate's been changing since..."...which is a facile dismissal.

sure, the climate's been changing...but not at this rate, at least not that anyone has verified in the past half-million years (based on ice cores from antarctica and peat bogs in the arctic, etc).

sure, it's a conspiracy by 99.9% of the climate scientists on the earth, the UN, and all the green/lefties out there. they control the NSF, almost all major universities on the planet, the UN, etc...plausible.

you keep driving and doing your thing, deniers...god forbid you'd have to change your behavior and sell your Exxon stock...just easier to pretend cigarettes don't give you cancer...that's essentially the logic we're working on here.

carry on.

The specific Karakoram glaciers cited in the literature are unique in the context of global observations of alpine glaciers. Glacier dynamics, at the Karakoram sites, though forced by large scale climate change, are additionally influenced by regional and localized variables. Debris cover on the surface of the glaciers (a function of the steep adjacent rock walls) is a proposed mechanism to explain the anomalous behavior. As mentioned earlier, mass balance is highly complex and dependent on many factors that vary on both temporal and spatial scales.

Emerging studies regarding the Karakoram glaciers improve our understanding of glacier dynamics and help constrain climate models. They have yet to falsify climate change.

My navigator keeps me from getting lost

It doesn't take science, or even that much intelligence, to recognize that we have an impact on the environment. If we all shit at the base of a climb, it's going to stink. We don't need scientists to prove or disprove that. If we all pump chemicals into the atmosphere, it's going to have an effect. And, it probably isn't going to be a good one.

It puzzles my mind that republicans are still trying to disprove common sense.

NPR did a bit on this today - it wasn't hard to follow. To sum it up:
If we have climate change, some places will get warmer, some perhaps colder, and many likely wetter. Snow makes glaciers, so some of them might increase in size. The Karakoram is a range in the Himalaya which appears to be in the minority since it is apparently increasing while the rest are not.

Oh no. You are so WRONG. Pitiful little humans CANNOT affect something BIG. And anyway, Republicans can't smell shit.

You stay away from mah pig!

Hey, remember last winter, when it was really cold, how a bunch of the climate change deniers were like, "See? It's cold! There's no global warming!"

By that logic, this year shouldn't they all be saying, "hey, this winter was really warm! Global warming is real! I was wrong!"

I'm going to go ahead and assume it's because they all figured out the difference between large scale patterns and single data points.

Airlift polar bears to the Karakoram. I can't be the only one who though of that.

Way to call out people for dragging out a thread by draggin it out further. That is no way epitomizes hypocrisy:

You should spend less time being a Ballscout and advising what topics people should post on. Maybe adhere to your own advice? (your post on the topic, "when is it ok to open your mouth")

Never. Keep it to yourself. It's not you're responsibilty to keep the dumb alive. If you don't like what they are doing, move along. It ultimately doesn't effect you. Why are some people so insistant on telling others what to do?

BTW: global warming is fake! i went outside to water my lawn and it was cold out!

Way to twist a post. (the sound of two hands clapping). I bet you have great fights with your boyfriend. Go outside and water your lawn some more.
