Good climbs with water approaches

Hey all,

A friend of mine was recently raving about his inflatable kayak and trying to convince me to purchase one. This got me thinking about climbs that you approach by water. A long time ago I did Roger's Rock and found it quite enjoyable.

Does anyone out there know of any other worthwhile outings of this nature? I'm from the Northeast so I'd be interested in stuff in this area, although I do travel during the summer...so I'd really like to hear about, well, anything that fills the bill. It's never too early to start planning that next adventure.

Cheers,

Sean (tommy)

Try the above link. For some climbs it is dependent on the water level in the lake (Summersville, West Virginia) whether it is a land or water approach.

Thanks for the info!

Z.St.Jules, I've added Mt. Moran to my list for when I eventually find myself back in Wyoming. For any of you armchair forum followers, these are the routes that I found interesting there:

DavidLG, according to the guidebook for NRG, the deep-water soloing in that area is now illegal and incurs a substantial fine if caught.

Max Forbes, that looks pretty cold.

Keep'em coming folks.

My take on the ban at Summersville is that it is loosely enforced and targeted at cliff jumping and not DWS. If they see you actually jumping off the top of the cliff, then yes they will fine you, but if you are climbing and fall, no problem. I've done DWS there since the "ban" and have never had a problem. I've also seen people blatantly jumping off cliffs without any problems.

that said, they do watch that lake like hawks (mostly looking for drunken boaters). You might call the ranger station there (or whoever the local authorities are) and ask for clarification.

Go to Norway...the whole coast of the country (including fjords + fresh water tributaries) is basically the mother of all water approaches to soaring granite cliffs-have fun.

Some of the areas around questa New Mexico on the Rio grande would be sweet for this. Basalt splitters all over that area in the Rio Grande gorge.

Shovel point and Palisade head in Northern Minnesota would certainly be adventurous from water.

Palasades and barn rock on lake champlain, willsboro. Lots of bouldering on the maine coast. Newfoundlandnlooked like unlimited possibilities but you would want a real sea kayak

Any of these climbs near the Black Canyon, CO:

We climbed Northwest Rib on the Curecanti Needle and it was great, especially the last pitch. Hike down, kayak across, climb up, and then reverse. There are dams on either side of the reservoir so you could paddle around a bit, but eventually have to carry your kayak back out.

Do you have any details about the boat your friend purchased? I've been shopping for one for myself.

Depends on if you want an excuse to paddle. You could paddle and then hike into tongue mt or hike the whole way. Or you could climb shelving rock and then walk to the water and paddle across lake George and do tongue cutting out a ton of driving. There are nice camping spots near shelving rock too

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
