Rap down to water and climb. Or you can have belay...

Description

All the cliffs that are at Gitchie Manitou State Preserve, surround a pond, so you will be climbing a top rope above water. There has never been a climbing route established here before. This climbing isn't all that great but if you have nothing to do, might as well stop by and climb. The rock is Sioux Quartzite.

This is the same type of rock found at Blue Mounds State Park in Minnesota (MProj page link). Another more well-known area with this type of rock is Devils Lake near Baraboo, Wisconsin. It is not the same formation of quartzite, but has the same characteristics that demand more precise footwork.

Getting There

From I-90 in Sioux Falls, going either North or South, take 229 east.

Take the East 10th Street exit (highway 42). Follow for approx. 6 miles and go south onto 481st. Street.

Follow this street for 2 miles. You will encounter a 90 degree left hand turn. That is where you park.

It may not seem like a parking spot but it is...there will be a house in front of you where you park. Trail proceeds off to your right.

Don't follow main trail!!! Turn left (south) about 50 yards from start of trail. Then keep going for about another 40 yards.
