Description

A collection of weathered (chossy) bighorn dolomite fins, blocks and a couple of towers on a high ridge overlooking Highway 14a and the North Tongue River. The approach is cross-country and rather long, but scenic, and the views from the area are great. This area is labeled on USGS topos.

Getting There

From Sheridan, head north on Interstate 90 for 15 miles to US Highway 14Exit 9. Follow Highway 14 west for 7 miles, passing through Ranchester, to Dayton. From Dayton, follow Highway 14 for 25 miles to Burgess Junction.

At Burgess Junction, turn right (west) onto Highway 14a, and turn right (north) onto Forest Service Road 15 immediately after the triangular intersection of Burgess Junction ends. Zero your odometer here.
Follow FS 15 for 1.6 miles to an intersection, stay left on FS 15 toward Dry Creek/Freezeout Point.
At 2.5 miles, a cattleguard/fence line is crossed, turn left (west) onto Forest Service Road 165. This is passable for mid-clearance vehicles.
At 5.5 miles, FS 165 ends, park here.

FS 165 ends on an open ridge, just below a forested area. From the car, hike left (south) a couple of hundred yards to pick up some game trails through the fringe of the forest past a water tank. Once through the trees, hike up the open ridge, generally following a fence line to the west. The Garden of the Gods is at the top of this ridge, about 1.5 miles from the car. The hike takes approximately 30-40 minutes.
