The July 29th storm caused a good bit of damage through the park and along the Backbone ridge area (Group Camp B). I'm new to the area and can't say for sure which problems are affected but I'd guess 20-30 problems, on some of the best rock, will not be climbable until blown down trees are cleared from the base of the rocks. The work will require a small crew and a chain saw. The park staff is still clearing debris. It seems that a clean up effort in the bouldering area should be coordinated with the park administration...

I also visited the Godfather boulder which was in good shape. I wouldn't be surprised if higher areas along the ridges will need some work though.

The pictures don't really convey the extent of the damage up there. 2' diameter oaks snapped in half...

Thanks for posting JKane.

I went through the group camp B area today - it's in pretty bad shape. And the DNR won't do anything because it's a non-designated use area (I talked to the park superintendent). That means it's up to us. And we won't easily - or ever(?) - get permission to use chainsaws, so it'll be a bit of work.

Godfather looks in pretty good shape though. Didn't check out any of the other areas yet, but hope to within the next few days.

Watch this thread for updates on damage and possible volunteer opportunities.

I went to the backbone ridge two weekends ago and I cleaned up the Highly Executed boulder and Get the Hell Out of Dodge, but there is a ton of work to still do there... Ben Strobel
