Front Page Climbing Destination List

What's the algo that determines which places show up on the first page under "Browse and Find Climbing Destinations"? The Bugaboos and The Grampians show up with only 25 and 13 listed climbs (don't get me started about why they aren't listed under Canada and Australia instead of the International header) while Spain (107 climbs) and UK (670 climbs) are hidden. My guess is that these places are just static. Maybe it would be a good idea to use some of the code written for the new "Classics" section to do something similar for areas. It would be great if that list was based on which areas had the most classic climbs. Alternately, it could just be based on the areas that people have most frequently marked as favorites. Either way, the section takes up almost a third of the front page and seems pretty stagnant.

Anthony,

When creating areas you have several options to call it either a Crag, Mountain or Destination.

So basically the areas that show up as a destination have all been selected as a destination either by the person posting a new area or by an admin at a latter date. Its a manual process and from time to time I change some of them.

The reason why Canada and Australia show up as "international" and not as their respective countries was that we thought it made sense to combine these areas until they became more active and the number of routes grew. In my browser, the international section in destinations is taking up a very short section of screen space.

If you can recommend what areas in Spain and Britain are "destination worthy" I'll made the change.

Thanks for the feedback.

Cheers

john

Hey John,

I didn't mean to suggest that the "International" section of the list took up a third of the front page. I meant that the "Browse and Find Climbing Destinations" section was taking up a third of the front page and that it seemed out of date. Thanks for explaining the method being used. I've created several areas and never noticed the Destination setting--my bad. I'd still suggest that it might make sense to automate this process rather than leaving it manual. You guys have done such a good job with the Classics section.

Thanks,

Anthony

Thanks Anthony, I think I understand now, you're referring to the home page.

Anthony,

Thanks for the feedback. I've cleaned up the International list a bit. You were right, it hadn't been changed since significant content was added.

Unlike routes, we'll never be able to "automate" that list. What makes an area a top-level area is highly subjective (for instance, some areas without many routes we surface to PROMOTE route contributions, etc.)... whereas it is very easy to look at user behavior and surface the routes that are "popular and classic".

Hope this helps
Andy
