Getting ready for the first ice climb of the 07/08 season.

I know it's a long shot. I am looking for some ice climbing boots for my son. He wears a boys 5. I thought there might be some women's boots out there that might work for him.

What ??

I don't understand if thegreenalien is asking a question about kids and ice climbing.....or wether the green alien has kids so it knows of if the idea is good or not...

Personally any parent loves to be told what to do or not to do with their kids....

But this site is FULL of people that know everything.......

Hope you find the boots........

How I Send

I saw a 10yr old at vail last year with modified 5.10 Mountain masters with Fruit Boot Style Crampons - I guess this might be a DYI kinda situation.

Ice climbing + anyone = use of caution.
Kids + anything = use of caution.
He's not bad and he likes it so I will encourage it. Even his little sister likes it. She just doesn't like to go anywhere but Ouray.
I have strap on crampons for him now, but would like to get some stiffer boots. It's time for new winter boots you know.
He has Grivel Lil Monsters

Sweet photos Ozone!
My son - 13 - is about ready for an introduction to ice climbing. Just need to sort boots - and I have to wonder about his ability to wield a set of axes though.

How old was your son when he first climbed ice?

Windy!

Awesome...I wish my parents were doing stuff like that when I was a kiddie. I didn't pick up most of my "hobbies" until I was much older.

Starting that young he'll be Will Gadd by 12.

My Daughter climbed ice @ 5. It's great to give our kids opputunities that we never had. We can teach them safety and keep them close as they grow up rather then learning like a lot of us did, trail and error from a bunch of testosterone driven boys. (hopefully not too much error). Ski boots are a good way to go but getting crampons to fit can be difficult. I know that the Ouray ice fest has a metal guy that cuts and welds old gear to fit for children. Gotta be creative

HEY OZONE,

I am checking around with the small gals and their mountain boots.

Have you traced your sons foot and got the size or length? Might help my search.

Check this size chart.

Any stiff, leather, hiking/work type boot should work (with strap-on crampons). Perhaps other manufacturers, such as Redwing, Rocky, Caterpillar, etc. - check around. "Farm and fleet" and other agriculture/implement stores usually have these...especially in kids' sizes.

Hey Kevin,
My wife wears about a size 4-5 in kids shoes. She has a pair of LS Makalus that she doesn't use any more. They're actually a bit tight on her. If your coming to Ice night this Friday I can have them there for you to look at. They're step in compatible.

Cheers!
Alex

Maybe cut out a foot-size piece of thin plywood to sandwich between the crampon and boot sole? That should lessen boot flex.
