The sun is setting and yet another problem in the books

Hello there, my name is Colin and I have been making rope rugs for about 4 months now and I have about seven in my house, from the size of 2.5 to 4.5-feet wide. They are great as gifts and they are great on your feet, as a door mat, or kitchen, etc... If you are interested in me making you a rug, I can do it for a small price. Also if you have any used rope I would be more than welcome to buy it off of you. The more rope the better. Most of my rugs are about 3 feet wide. Round, and not one has fallen apart.

Here is a picture of one of my rugs that I made for my parents. That one was about the 8th one I made. Each time they look better b/c you learn from each one. Take a look. They are really nice and they are awesome with bare feet.

I have been busy lately; I have made four rugs in the last 5 days. Two of them are going to be raffled off at our gym's climbing comp coming up in a few weeks, and the other two are sitting here waiting to be sold.
Both are about 3 feet wide
1. Tan in the middle with a blue ring on the outside.
2. Green in the middle with a purple surrounding that.

Both really nice. I hope to sell them soon so I can start making some more. If interested let me know.

Colin,
Your rug looks great! I've been thinking about making a rug out of old ropes for a while. Might you clue me in to the process you've found most successful? I know this isn't the response you're hoping for, in terms of making a profit off of your rugs, but I think it would be wonderfully rewarding to walk on one's own tattered rug. How are you holding the rope together--probably not with duct tape on its underside, eh?

I sent you a PM Madaleine, but I'm not about to cue you in on my process of making rugs. To each their own.

I now have my rugs up at the local climbing gym here in town but I also want to sell rugs on here still, so once again if you are interested please let me know. If you would like to see some pictures of my latest work, I can get some for you.

Rugs will be sold for $25-30 for normal size which is about 28in wide. A rug that is larger will be a little more expensive but not much; depends on the size.

I am also still looking for donations of used rope or I will buy a used rope off you.

Now make them really trick and non-slip by adding a thin layer layer of liquid nails to the back!

Word!

Most of my rugs are like door mats, or they sit in a hallway or room. On our wood floors they don't slide nor do they slide on the carpet floors at home where my parents have three or four rugs.

Worst case, I have added non-slip pads that go under area rugs, just glued them to the bottom of the rugs. They don't move an inch. I pretty much have all the kinks worked out on these rugs. I'm just waiting for someone to buy a few.

What do I have to do to get these moving, or get them to be sold?

I quickly made a website tonight. It's still on the drawing board and getting better. Problem is that Yahoo doesn't really like Macs all too well, so it will get better once I put it all on a PC at home. But here is the site. Hope you like it.

No sorry. I made one kind of oblong for my sister but it doesn't really come out that well. Round is much easier for me to do. I can try again for a longer oblong shape if you would like ?

I get excited over a large desert rack

If anyone wants the beta on how to make climbing rope rugs, dig up your old climbing magazines about a year ago they posted a tech tip detailing how to make a climbing rope rug. What they did is first wash your rope then lay out a tarp then coil your rope like you want circle oblong, etc. then use a whole can of caulk on the back and spread it around and let it dry for a day, then after that dries duck tape the back and then flip it over and you have a fancy rug.

Learn to do the woven versions folks, takes some actual skill, though not that tricky..and, they are MUCH cooler looking than the basic wound in a circle style ones. YMMV.

I agree that the woven rope rugs look better...does anyone know of a good source for directions (and especially some how-to pictures)?
I've recently began trying different weaves and haven't found the right one yet.

"The Morrow Guide to Knots" has a very nice explanation with pics of how to weave a rope mat.

Lol... I think you are trying to sell to the wrong market. The majority here have old ropes lying around. Why would we pay 40 dollars for another one that happens to be 'coiled' in a circle? We can do that ourselves for almost nothing.

Good luck with your business. You should try to sell to outdoors people who aren't climbers. They are more likely to eat that shite up. Also, I don't think mountainproject is meant to be an advertiser for business. Anyhoo...

Totally, is the "forum" really meant to be a swapmeet or bargin trader anyway? Colin try your luck in ebay.

Sorry if I hosed your top-secret business plan by showing people where they could learn to make higher quality product on their own, instead of being scammed out of forty bucks by you. I would guess you probably have less than ten dollars worth of materials and 45 min of labor in these things, and somehow I'm the ass?

"Each time they look better b/c you learn from each one."

Pretty steep learning curve there?LOL...sorry...couldn't resist.

Agreed....Sorry Colin....winding them in a circle is actually no big deal, very simple to do, and very simple looking...though there are even tricks to hiding the tails on that style as well. Nobody is pooping on your parade here....just calling it like it is man. Maybe directing these at another user group (like JG proposed) would be more effective. Good Luck!

It's also a violation of the lesser known guideline #2:

Wow Colin,

Way to remove your offensive post after people have already quoted it. Makes you look like a real upstanding businessman, who stands behind his word.

Cheers,
James
