Buying an AT set-up: What should I expect to pay for this (lightly) used setup?

Hopefully you folks can help... I was offered an AT ski-setup and neither of us (myself and the seller) know exactly what the gear is worth and Google is only semi-helpful with stuff more than a year or two old, it seems.

Anyways, the question is... how much should I pay for this entire setup, as a package? Consider all the gear to be lightly used, stored properly, and in great condition. A ballpark figure is totally fine. We're just trying to get an idea/starting point.

  • Skis: 2003/04 Black Diamond Crossbows - 179s
  • Bindings: Diamir Freerides - the older gray version (I assume 03/04 as well)
  • Boots: Dynafit TLT 700s, three-buckle design (assuming 03/04 as well)
  • Skins: G3 climbing skins in good shape

Thanks, everyone... I'm pretty good when it comes to booting up and down mountains, but this strapping planks to your feet and cuttin' loose is foreign as hell to me. But, I'm pumped to get going with it!

Also, I realize this may or may not be the right place for this, so if a moderator sees it and wants to put it where it belongs, I would appreciate it.

Thanks, hopefully a few more people will chime in... $1000 v. $500 is a big difference.

During year end sales, you could get a much better setup than that new for less than 1k. That stuff is not only ancient at this point, it's middle of the line. 300-500, IMO. AT is very gear sensitive. Some stuff performs like shit, some pretty good. Frankly, until you get into the higher end stuff - most is junk and will ski like the cheapest of alpine gear. The sport also has a lot of turnover when people find out the danger and work involved. That said, I'd say skip buying someone else's mis-buy and check into something like Bent Gate's demo program. That will get you out there and give you a feel for the gear.

Edited after more research:
$500 to $600 seems fair.

The skis/bindings/skins are probably worth about $300 to $350.

The boots are probably worth $175 to $250.

Thanks! These estimates are really helping. Looking like the consensus so far is around ~$550.

And JLP, I totally agree with your points, but I'm not in a geographic location to try out any AT stuff nor visit sales. Also, this is simply my first set-up, from it I intend to learn and shape my future gear to fit my style. So, no worries if this stuff isn't just right, as long as it gets me up and down.

Scott, don't let JLP make you think that this setup is junk. It's not. 6 years really isn't that old if the gear hasn't been skied on much.

Also, it is my understanding that other companies will start making dynafit style bindings soon (I think the patent is expiring). When that happens, you will be stoked on those boots for your second set of AT skis/bindings.

THAT IS A NICE SETUP AND EASILY WORTH $500. SKINS WOULD RUN YOU $150.00, AT BOOTS CAN BE REALLY EXPENSIVE THESE DAYS, THE SKIS ARE GREAT AND A SUPERB SETUP FOR ALL AROUND TOURING. DIAMIRS ARE GREAT BINDINGS, I HAVE THREE PAIRS AND EVERY PAIR IS STILL WORKING AS GOOD AS NEW. CLIMBING SKINS SEEM TO LAST FOREVER IF THEY ARE WELL CARED FOR AND I HAVE OWNED MULTIPLE PAIRS OF BLACK DIAMOND SKIS AND HAVE ALWAYS BEEN HAPPY WITH THEM. ENJOY THE NEW SETUP!

03/04 gear is almost worthless, except the fact that it still works. Most of the stuff I see for sale that is that old is VERY cheap.

Skis and skins - maybe $75 ... you'd be lucky if you could even sell them if they didn't have bindings on them.

Bindings - $175-200 ... usually what old freerides go for.

Boots - $150'ish ... Old, used 3 buckle boots aren't worth much.

If they guy really wants to sell them Id offer

ski setup - $250

boots - $150

Thanks to you last three that responded. The explanations are really helping me get a handle on how much this type of stuff is worth. Looks like the consensus is still in the $550 range.

Hopefully a few more of you AT vets will chime in...

Thanks!

I hate to add complications but where you are in the country has a lot to do with how much things are worth.

I lived in Salt Lake City for a while and there is so much stuff it drives prices down.

If you were in Wisconsin, then people would say "rando-what"

That being said.

100-120 bindings

100-120 skis

50-70 for skins

150-200 for boots

So 400-500 seems reasonable,
The skis and the bindings are on the older side.
