Fitting hatch for dirtbagging.

Ok, heads up. I use the term for Dirtbag very loosely in this contact. Long weekends and the occasional couple of weeks at the time.

Now for the actual part. I just got my first car and want some ideas for fitting it out for sleeping. Its a little 4dr hatchback. A 2002 ford laser kq. Its a 2 and abit hour drive one way to my nearest crag and $10 a night camping (and the rangers check permits regularly) so the ability to sleep incognito down a side trail or outside the park will save me some cash. The back seats fold down but I don't think quite enough to be comfortable. So a way to have a flat area and possibly some small storage underneath would be good. Found one general idea but if like to see some pics of what people have done or any experience. Thanks.

I don't know if your car is similar, but in my Subaru I need to remove the back seat bench before folding the backs down, then this lets the backs fold down flat with room underneath. I can get a bouldering pad in the cargo area.

My friend O'Neil did something that sounds like what you're looking for: mountainproject.com/v/honda…

I am 6' 2" and I have a fiat 500. My rear seats fold flat, cooler and gear go where your feet would go if you were sitting in the rear seats. I then push the front seat down and as far forward as it goes. The gear on top of my cooler creates a flush surface with the folded down rear seats and the folded front seat acts as a "pillow". It is a cozy set up, but it can handle two grown dirtbags and with gear and a week of food. I will post pictures soon.

Can sleep comfortably half in the trunk of my Jetta, having a Thule roof rack and box has been key for 3+ week trips, can find them for cheap on Craigslist I believe

Yeah dude!
I slept in this 2010 subaru outback sport for about a month this past summer before my girlfriend joined me and we started tenting most nights. If you fold the passenger side seat forward and fold the back seat, there is more than enough room (for one).
Best part is the storage underneath, built a small shelf that is perfect for cooking on. Spent the whole summer doing this and I loved it. I'm 5'11 for reference.
With a thule box on top (craigslist! got mine for free!) you can leave the third seat up. Kitchen, storage, bed, 3 seats, 32 mpg's, drives like a rally car...

She's no sprinter, and I'm no van driving soccer mom. Keep the hatchbagging alive!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
