FAH-Q (isn’t that how it’s pronounced?)

Welcome Gumby/NooB/etc., to the wonderful world of Mountain Project. If you’re smart, you’ll use the site for info on climbing areas and routes. If you end up in the forums, don’t say I didn’t warn you.

How do I start?
First off, if you want to save anything (ie, “ticks” or “favorite areas”) or if you want to post to the forums, or if you want to view the “community” forum, you’ll have to sign up and log in. Most of the site functionality works without signing up and logging in, but it does have limitations. Anyway, it’s free and as far as I know, MP won’t spam you with pr0n. Click on the photos to zoom in

After you do that, you’re ready to go.

How do I find climbing areas and routes to climb?

Select an area from the “destination” list from the header (look up up up), or type in the name of something in the search field. Once there, you can browse the routes. Utilize the Route Search function to find routes that match your custom criteria (we’re all special flowers).

Or, just browse around and explore.

What about bookmarking stuff for easy access?

That functionality exists, too. The “Favorite Areas” list keeps, well, your favorite areas. It’s accessable from the homepage. Adding faves is easy and can be done from two places:

1. The home-page. Click where it says “change” under Favorite Areas to select an area from the destination list

2. The area page itself. After you’ve navigated to the area page, click where it says “make this a favorite area”.

I’ve heard that 8a.nu lets you keep track of stuff on a tick list. Is MP that cool?

You can add ticks to your tick list by clicking in the appropriate place on the route info page. You can also add a difficulty rating and a quality rating in the same place, but don’t go crazy with unless you at least kinda know what you’re talking about, ok? If 89 people say it’s a 5.6 but you think it’s a 5.11c, you’re probably wrong.

You can view your tick list thru your personal page. Click your user name in the upper right corner of the screen to access this. Your tick list is public and visible to all other users, fyi.

Ps. The comments section is not for saying how awesome of a time you had on the route. Use your tick list for that. Reserve comments for route info, advisories, etc. You know, pertinent stuff.

I’m ready to swim with the sharks. How do you use the forums?

Only because you asked. I tried to warn you, though. You’re going to have to sign in to post, or to read the community forum.

The most recent posts are available from the home page. If you want to browse through the entirety of the forums, click the forums link at the top of the homepage, et voila. Click the little page-with-arrow to jump to the most recent post in a thread

How do I post a new topic / thread?

Select the forum you want, and then click the “new topic” button. This works in any forum. It may not work in some browsers though, so if it’s invisible, try a different browser.

How do I reply in a topic / thread?

There are two ways to do this, too. Either click the “reply” button at the beginning or end of the thread, or click the “quote” button in the post you wish to respond to.

John this is awesome, but you forgot to mention about buying one of these before posting a reply or new topic.

I suit-up every time before logging on to MP!
P.S.

Maybe you could provide some instruction on removing unneccesary symbols and clutter from posts. For example, when an apostrophe is needed, that should be unaccompanied by superfluous letters.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
