Me and my pup, Mabel, on the Launch Pad at Whitehorse Ledge, NH.

I realize I am not the administrator, nor do I ever want to be the person responsible for quality control (is this actually possible on such an emmense public forum/database as this?), but after reading several route descriptions, it has come to my knowledge that people are posting route beta without having actually climbed the route, or posting beta loooong before they've climbed the route. Come on people, as participants in a sport that is inherently risky, we need to be intimate enough with a route before we post information so we can share meaningful, useful and correct information with climbers that rely on this website for area descriptions. In my eyes, a post by someone who's climbed the route holds more clout than a post based on second-hand knowledge, or having watched someone climb it.

So how can we be proactive enough so as to put an end to said behavior? Having sent the climb or not isn't the biggest demand, but please clmb the route before you post anything about it. Also, try to be objective when posting--including some personal/historical annecdotes act as sweet icing on the cake, but it shouldn't engulf the post: Accurate and succinct information trumps all. And finally, we are New Englanders with an honest-to-goodness work ethic; let's be true to ourselves, our collective conscience and those climbers we are helping out by posting information about routes we are stoked on!

I've added 4 routes I have not climbed, but two I have attempted and know private beta from FA parties on the other two as well as the two I attempted. (but I'm a history buff)

It is important to know the nitty gritty of the route if your going to post it up -especially if you are giving it a grade and security rating.

Any one can eyeball a line, look at an existing topo or description, and write in. Ideally forums should allow personal experience to shine light on the route named.

...as for Lumpy Unmentionables, DDC and I tried the first pitch (circa '92) and Waugh, a old longtime personal friend gave me details 20 years ago on the route. I'd also hate the route to go away (especially bolted over- Scott Ayres route comes damn close) without at least noting Jim Waugh's boldest first ascent in the State.

This is akin to putting a bolt (the murder of the impossible) in the mountain because you are not strong enough for the route. You're incapable and you're done. There is a climber out there who will do your line clean. Don't be a selfish prick and bolt my route.

There are many a climber out there who HAS done and many more who WILL do the climb you are so anxious to post. This site succeeds because it goes one step further than a guide book--FIRST-HAND route beta on every route. EVERY ROUTE. If I want to read second hand, "It appears as if the route trends left..." beta (as 30% or more of guides are) I'll read my guide book.

Wait! I already read my guide book and am on a computer instead of on a rock looking for some FIRST-HAND beta.

How about we wait for the person who ***knows what they are talking about*** to describe the route, eh? You can earn precious points adding your historical, second-hand 'beta' and photos.
