I feel your pain, ran in to the same problem when living in Schenectady for 2 years. I was able to find an area suitable for ice climbing solo.
Plotters Kill falls in ?Rotterdam? off of Mariahville rd. It's about 10-15 minutes out of Schenectady, pretty casual approach. Bring a rope and a harness, you will need to rap down (or walk around) 2 separate falls. Further downstream you will find a third set of falls in an alcove to your left, this is the easiest of the three. As always, bring a beater screw just in case you find the need to bail, as I had to on the R side of the first (last on your way out) falls. Somewhere in the drink there is a Petzl stubby.
