Description
Perhaps this area will become more populated with other crags in the future, but as of the posting of this area I'm not aware of anything other than Phalanx of Will. But for the sake of future organizability, Dutchman's Draw is the parent group. If you're looking for remote climbing and tons of new route potential, you've found a great opportunity.EDIT 2019: As of March 2019, Phalanx of Will is still the most developed cliff in Dutchman's Draw, but there are many routes that have gone up on the walls left and right of the wash on the hike in. If you know names and FA's, please add! The features these routes climbed looked fantastic and high quality with short approaches. Instead of hiking up the main, large wash to the left to Phalanx of Will, we checked out the smaller canyon with tons of rock to the right. Lots of rock to be had in that neck of the woods....
Getting There
Heck if I know. Here's some directions: summitpost.org/phalanx-of-w…
I tried getting here following the guidebook's ( stores.sharpendbooks.com/ro…) directions and realized that a lot has changed here since the publishing. Nonetheless, I was able to get to the cattle chute before getting stuck in sand. You need a high clearance vehicle or dirt bike/quad to get out here.
Please email me if you made it out here and tell me how. Here's my description, based on following the guidebook, up until the point where I got stuck:
Drive down Bluff St. southbound and past I15 and follow it around to the left as it becomes East Riverside Dr. Follow this 1.7mi. and turn right on S. River Rd. Cross the river and make a left onto 1450 and follow it 2.1mi. In those last .2mi. it will swing southward and at 2.1mi. you'll see 1580 or 3650 on your left. Turn left here and follow it to the big corrals. These are noted in the guidebook, but now there's new road construction, so you can actually turn right on S. Washington Fields Rd. before the corrals now. Follow this road past the new housing development and continues to get closer to the new highway. You'll pass under the overpass of the new highway and it will turn into a gravel road. Continue down this road 3.3mi. (just past a cattle chute on your left), turn right and get stuck in sand.
If you have a more accurate or thorough description of how to get there, please PM me and I'll give you this area to complete. And head out there with a Bosch and put something up!
