Cut a slit in the end, make a wedge to fit and drive it in until it bottoms out in the hole and expands.
Take one end and wrap it around the threads at the end of the rod so it stays put. Bend the other end into a simple, spring-loaded barb. Shove/tap the rod into place. Done.
I recommend practicing without the glue first. Take a hanger and nut so you can pull the rod out when it's time to put in the glue.
