I'd like to see an Off-Topic forum where things that are certainly NOT related to climbing can be discussed. The Community forum is for: "Discussions not necessarily related to climbing....". Then can we please find a way to moderate off-topic threads/discussions to this Off-Topic forum? (this may be a long-term goal)

Once this Off-Topic forum is created, enable the RSS feed for forums to include/exclude different forum sections.

Recently the majority of posts here have been about politics/personal grievances or dogs, and I just want to read about climbing. If the usual suspects want to bitch all day we might as well give them a place to do it where I don't have to read it. I like being up-to-date on climbing discussions, that's it.

Off topic posts??!! I'm shocked, shocked!! :) Why are you looking at me?

Do you have a warrant? No you can't see my outbox, hard drive or RAM cache. On the advice of counsel I am exercising my 5th amendment right to remain silent.

Mark,

You'll be pleased to know this feature is already available on MP.

Here's how to use it:

1) Look at the list of topics.
2) Click only the ones you want to read.

That's nice. And if a crack is bolted we should just ignore the bolts, right? You did read the part where I talked about the RSS feed, didn't you? Do you use the RSS feed?

I'm in the "gettin' my learn on" stage of my climbing life, so I've mostly just been reading the threads here and using them as a learning tool. (I'm not even sure what a troll is).

It is unfortunate egos are involved. And especially unfortunate when those egos think that this is a debate forum. This isn't a debate forum is it?

No disrespect here, but Cangi, Bubb, BobD, PRRose, et al. need their own web space. We can call it www.kencangiwilldebateanythingandeverything.com

You guys are all smart and have done incredible things in the climbing world, but when the poo-slinging starts.....it gets a tad tiresome.

So I 2nd the OP.

But I don't mind the poo-slinging on climbing related threads. It's been really informative to see the views of ol' crusties vs. sportos.

I guess I have too much time on my hands. I pretty much read anything anyone posts. I think it's fun to read the wise-cracks, and even sometimes the crack-pots. This is my Myspace/friendster/facebook - I am a sad, sad bolt-loving climber with a MP addiction.

A happy day in the snow. Bart and Lisa had a hard time standing still for the photo.

I actually enjoy reading the non-climbing related forum posts, except when people start arguing and going off on one another. But many of the climbing-related posts turn into big arguments, so can we have a "debate forum" that separates this out so we don't have to read through it? :)

Too many cocks and not enough hens around here. Make a page for the cocks to get all self involved and offend eachother. Maybe the rest of us will start to enjoy the site again instead of just "using" it in a foul way.

it has been looking more and more like a fire hydrant around here and less of a climber exchange which it used to be.

Too Funny, LMAO!!! You know more about these forums than you do about climbing it sounds like. You hit the nail on the head with your analysis of MP forums.

My advice to you is to not learn how to climb from these threads. There is so much subjective and opinionated information on here that it would be hard to sort out the BS from the trolls and the honest posts. Craig Luebbens books kick ass for a general resource, but you can't learn from a book without application. Hire a guide once in a while as well to clear up some questions and push it a bit. If you can't afford a guide, just make an effort to get out with more experienced folks as much as possible.

Just come here for entertainment because most of the stuff on here is just that and a bunch of people that are just trying to entertain themselves and get a reaction from you. Take this site for what it's worth, but I think you are spot on with your observations and you don't have to log on much to figure out as much as you have about MP.

Before it was mountainproject I used to come here quite a bit, It was actually more of a junk show then, but even more entertaining and just loose fun. It is still kind of like that Now, but it's just the same people making the same arguments under different titled topics, and eventually most threads lead to the same arguments with the same people. It's quite amusing to me.

Cheers and climb safe.

It seems like the main problem is that most people are fed up with the a-holes, not necessarily the off-topic posts. Unfortunately there isn't much that can be done about that.

Not an admin....just a moderator, and the forum is small lol we don't do much. But I'm just saying the people here are much more welcoming and "friendly" then most sites I'm on. It just seems that even with the slight banter here and there its a great group of people and its really not that bad.

My day job is working with computers, so I manage to stay logged in most of the time. Yes I'm moving to CO just got this email actually:

Dear Seth Luedtke,

This email is to confirm your move-in date of 09/23/2008 at Village Creek
at Brookhill.

We look forward to having you as our neighbor and a member of the
community! If there is anything we can do to help make your move go
smoothly, please call us at (303)431-5206.

We have set up a Web site designed to help make your move easier. Please
take advantage of our extended resident services and visit us at
www.AimcoConnect.com . You can use it to connect your utilities, change
your address, find a mover and more!

Thanks again, and we look forward to having you as a resident of Village
Creek at Brookhill.

however I'm going to be "learning" how to climb :)

And as far as slowing down....well I'll make a deal, I'll slow down if you can figure out how to fit more hours in the day haha.

Cheers.

I agree but do we ban the handful of bad apples who incite 90% of this?

I've always been a fan of the cockpunch as a regulatory measure. In this case though I might not since I might be on the receiving end.

This thread seems to be going off topic itself, but, in this case, in a useful direction. I second, third, fourth the irritation with the majority of posts disintegrating into what's essentially name-calling/did too-did not arguments. Quite often, they seem to have nothing to do with any topic other than ego. The "off-topic" threads don't bother me, because I can choose whether to read them. But it's annoying and difficult to read around the off-topic bickering, because it infiltrates most threads. I don't know that censorship is the answer, but perhaps censorship for those who don't play by the 'rules'. Certainly there have been some repeated and frequent (and consistent) violators of guideline #1. Why have a guideline if it doesn't mean anything? So that the decision isn't on any one person's head, perhaps 'violators' could be submitted by concerned members of the mp.com community, and then voted on as a group - a jury of peers, per se. If the majority deem your contributions more violating than not, you go. If not, you stay?

jeeze what is this a witch hunt now ?? lol.

I'm not sure how this website works but on the forum I'm a mod on, you can "ban" members for a certain amount of time. I'd say violaters or people who the community feel should be disacplined could be sent on a say "2 week vacation" from the site and then see how they act if/when they return. It's worked on a couple of guys on other forums..maybe that could work here to?

Cheers.
