Does anyone have any info about possible deep water soloing opportunities in Crete? I've heard a few rumors, but I haven't been able to find anything concrete.

Thanks!

Hi Sam,

New to the forum so only just saw this. I'm currently in Crete and am about to start developing DWS sites around the Chora Sfakion area. Was down there yesterday and the headland to the east is looking good. Also a couple of sections to the west towards Lutro are looking ok. Will be on the next week so will post some GPS data and photos.

Hi Simon-

Thanks for the note. I'll be very interested to hear info and see photos! We're heading out in a few months and would be excited to check it out.

Hi Sam,

Just back from three days DWS in the Chora Sfakion / Lutro area.

There are some good sites for DWS. It's not in the same league as Vietnam but still good. I've got gps coords and photos to pass. I can put it on power point and email it direct if that's easier as not sure how to do it on this website! So send me your email if you want. Also going to put it to the climb in crete website.

Been to Corfu, Island

Corfu, Greece

And Zakynthos, Island
Zakynthos

There's a ton of little island off the coast of Greece, Crete is one of the biggest. They are all just hunks of limestone sticking out of the Sea. I'd be surprised if there wasn't DWS on every single one of them. Every single Island, endless limestone. Would love to got Crete, please post up what you find!

I'm spending the next 2 weeks in Crete and would love to check the DWS spots around hora skafion!

It would be awesome if you have a few pics and GPS loc.

And let me know if you're around!

Hey guys,

I'm also looking at doing some DWS in Crete and it sounds like this is the place to do it!

How did you get on down there? Would you mind sending me some GPS data??

Thanks a lot

Hi Everyone!

Is there any beta or established climbing in Crete? I will be with non-climbers in July, so deep water soloing would be the best for me since my friends do not want to climb and it will be a solo mission. Any information would help!!

thanks,

Meg

Also might be the best 'cause its plenty hot in Crete in July...(have been in April where it was comfy t-shirt weather).

Hi Everyone!

I've the same question as anybody else. I will be around the south coast with some none climbers. So deep water solo would be a very great opportunity to do at least some climbing. Any information would concerning the spots, gps and so on - help me, too!!

thanks a lot in advance

Hi,
I've just sent a couple of days near hora sfakion and found some really nice deep water solo spots.
One is located at the eastern end of Ilingas Beach: 35.2020, 24.1256 where you can easily spent a day, also with none-climbers :). The climbs are easily accessible by swimming a few meters and then climbing out of the water, which is already the first crux due to really slippery rock at Sea level.
On the first "pillar" coming from the beach, there is a 8m high 6a/6b if you go straight up on nicely shaped solid rock and some tufas. You can also traverse to the right which starts easy but gets harder (around 6c) once you're around the corner in the overhanging section. Make sure not to traverse further than the big dihedral because the water gets shallow there, you can instead probably top out at ~12m.
You can also find some nice but lower (5m) climbing on the second "pillar" in the range of 6c.
If you swim around the corner to the next beach (only accessible by swimming), you can do a nice traverse (5c) at Sea level at the western end.
Another dws spot is on the eastern end of marmara beach: 35.1970, 24.0588. The climbs there are lower (not more than 5 to 6 m) and the rock is much sharper. I only spent an hour there, so I didn't discover that many lines (only one nice 5c traverse over a cave) but I guess there's more potential.

Llingas Beach DWS in background of my lovely wife. Pretty enjoyable traverse coming back towards beach gets higher and higher. . Excellence crux section traversing to your right with your feet above a overhang on steep rock with small handholds and then heading up on nice cobbles that stick out with great holds

until they get loose at a large ledge perfect for jumping off.

Do you recall where this was? Staying at the blue palace and would like to find it. Also, did you get there by boat or drive from the top?

My wife took me there on a jet ski. Rather loose but your over the water. From breaking a hold and falling off on my first try, I am pretty sure climbing the overhang in the photo was a first accent. Since we were renting the jet ski I didn’t have  enough time to explore other sections of the cliff. Absolutely beautiful place, you will love the Blue Palace.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
