Cyborg Mono vs stinger crampons.

Can anyone compare for me the performance of the BD cyborg monopoint to the BD Stinger? I've been told that the stinger is the ferrari of tehnical crampons and digs so smoothly into the ice. Can anyone tell me about the way the cyborg monopoints perform. Also clear this up for me, people say converting the cyborg is a "one time hassle" does that mean once I convert them to mono, I can't convert them back? Thanks

I'm sure you can convert them back. I get the sense that folks find the experience of cutting the stiff antibot something they wouldn't want to do again. But since it only needs to be cut that first time, it is a "one time hassle".

I converted mine and like them a lot more now, can't compare to the stinger though, I know that was your original question...

I wish BD sold a monopoint antibot plate for the cyborg that you could swap out instead of cutting them. I don't know if this is realistic but I feel like if i switch them back the cut portion would cause snow to stick...

I might just buy new dualpoint antibot plates if i decide to switch them back

They are built on nearly identical platforms. I almost converted my Cyborgs then chickened out because it just seemed like I must be doing something wrong by hacksawing into the plate on my crampons. Since then I've acquired Cassin Blade Runner crampons (mono-point setup) that I love. I have a few friends that use the Stingers and love them. I also love the Cyborg for when the ice seems like a dual point would be better (chandeliered, etc.). I use mono point 99% of the time though. Sorry, didn't really answer your question, but maybe provided some insight to help you decide what you want to do.

I have both, and have used the cyborg plenty in mono before I got the stingers. I'd be hard pressed to tell the difference performance wise, honestly. They're basically the same thing. I currently keep my cyborgs as dual points for use with AT boots, since I won't be climbing anything techy in those anyway, and use the stingers with my climbing-specific boots, so handy to have both for me.

And yes, you can definitely convert the cyborgs back and forth. You do have to either remove or cut a slot into the bot plate once. It's a minor pain, but only has to be done once. You obviously can't un-cut the slot, but it doesn't make any noticeable difference to snow clearing to have it cut (which begs the question why didn't they just have a slot there when they manufactured it?) and put back in dual point mode. Be careful not to lose the bajillion spacers and bolts and everything when you convert/replace the front points.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
