The Cowboy Crags are located well up the west side of Ryan Mountain, above and slightly right from Saddle Rocks, as seen from the road. The identified routes in the guide are all traditional and located on the middle or highest formation. Other routes exist; however, I have no information about them at this time. The route to do here is the clean corner of Wisest Crack (5.7) which commands an impressive view from it's vantage point high on the flanks of Ryan Mountain.

Getting There

Park in the Hall Of Horror's parking lot and take the Saddle Rock trail east. Upon nearing Saddle Rock hike south (right)around that formation then head east up the steep slope toward the crags. Plan on a 45 minute, mostly uphill, approach from the car to the crags.

Wisest Crack 5.7 5a 15 V+ 13 MVS 4b  CA : Joshua Tree National Park : ... : Cowboy Crags
This route begins from a flat area atop a large rock, above and to the right of the main slabby face where Cling Peaches and The Unbearable Lightness Of Being are located. Up the very obvious left-facing dihedral which starts off the left side of the ledge. The rock is a nice chocolate brown and is impeccable in quality. A fun easy climb. Descend by scrambling around to the right....[more]   Browse More Classics in CA
