DescriptionIt's a bit of a walk, but Cougar has some of the best climbing the Steamboat area has to offer; routes are relatively long, sustained, and concentrated. There are plenty of trad climbs, but the sport routes are the area's gems. Cougar gets afternoon sun. Getting ThereDrive west on US Highway 40 to 129 Elk River Road. Drive north 16.5 miles to Seedhouse Road (on the right). Drive 6.3 miles to a jeep trail on the left (Trail 1177 - the first left hand turn after the road turns to dirt). Park and walk the road for about a mile, staying right when it forks. Look for a faint trail on the right, usually marked by a cairn. Follow this trail to Cougar. This route has tempted many a climber over the years; the several leaver biners are a testament to its deviousness. It was bolted as a project years ago and seemingly abandoned and largely forgotten. Due to the strange placement of a few key bolts, I believe the route hasn't seen a previous ascent.
