I hope this is not a repeat. I'm wondering if the beer walls are still muddy from the winter or any big recent rains. I know it can dry slowly but I don't know how slowly. Thanks! :)

Some routes were climbable on 5/18....it had rained heavy two days prior. We went to the lower beer walls and Blacksmith, Pegasus, Turbocharge were 95% dry and climbable. Left of Turbocharge the rock was generally too wet for me to want to climb. With all this moisture rolling through right now I wouldn't count on great conditions there this weekend.

I know that winter melt is not a issue. Climbed there in April with no problems.

It's been a few weeks, so things have certainly improved, especially with the trees starting to leaf out and the snow probably almost gone. I was climbing in the area the first week of May, and my brother needed to rent shoes. The Mountaineer told us to avoid the Chapel Pond area, look for more exposed stuff that would be dry. They still hadn't converted from winter to summer rental gear at that point. In fact, they were still renting skis and ice gear a few days before. We hit 3-5 ft of snow at 2500 to 4000ft while hiking the northern slopes.

Chapel Pond slab was looking very wet in places when last up there (2 weeks ago). There's a biggish mountain above there (Round Mt), so runoff is prolonged. The Beer Walls are on a nub, so runoff tends to end faster.

Black fly presence was minimal in High Peaks this past weekend. Camped near Indian Pass with zero bites. Not a single mosquito/black fly sighting on Wallface on Sunday either. Got a couple black fly bites in Lake George region Friday night and Monday afternoon, but nothing to complaint about.

Wilmington Notch had black flies, as did Azure. So they will be out soon enough in the CP area.

I don't have an online source for this but a climber at the gym I go to in Syracuse mentioned that there has been spraying/stuff put in the water to kill off the Black fly eggs in the chapel pond area. He very well could have been pulling my leg; but, he said there were minimal black flies this past weekend and sounded pretty confident that it would stay this way for awhile. I looked online for awhile to verify but couldn't find anything.

I believe they use BTI around around chapel pond. It is a bacteria they put in the water, kills the larva before they hatch I think. Whatever the case may be, its a miracle of science.
