Yup... it's true. The Rock Climbing Center in Monument will be opening the newest climbing gym in Colorado Springs. Right downtown on Nevada in the old Theatre. Stay up with progress at http://www.climbingtherock.com/page/CityRock . We are about half way done putting up the steel and plywood for the lead and top rope walls. The walls will be 40+ foot tall and have some insanely long lines on it. I'll post updates as we get closer to establishing an opening date. I'll see if I can get some model pictures of the wall and bouldering wall posted as well.
Cheers!

Gotta be ready for anything!!

Are you folks looking at building some training specific terrain in there as well? System board, Campus board, etc...

I took a look a week or so ago, can't wait.
Tony

Yup... the building will happen in stages. We'll initially open the facility with CrossFit in the front room. This should happen fairly soon.
Once the roped wall is finished, we'll open that to climbing, and begin building a deck and bouldering wall.
From there we will begin installing all the extras, training area, observation decks, etc.

What happens when you:
1) have nothing to do
2) own a sharp knife
3) have a large lime
4) own a patient cat
5) drink too much tequila
6) and it's football season?

(An e-mail I received; just know that no cat was harmed in the carving of this lime. Dogs Rule!!)

Congrats & nice job!

Here are some photos of the model we used to design the Climbing wall and Bouldering wall. You'll notice a long black line on the left side of the bouldering wall, splitting a massive roof. Yup...that will be a hand crack.

Will the bouldering area be free standing with topouts? What are your plans to the floor? Looks like we'll have something comparable to the gyms up in the Denver area!

Alex, Looks like things are off to a good start! We definitely need a decent gym here. Just curious how much square footage and how tall the walls will be. What other things are you guys planning? I saw mention of dry tooling! Any other goodies?

A grey fox skull wedged in a crack 100' up on a FA I was working on - don't see that every day...

Right on Alex! So what's a rough estimate for an opening date? The walls look sweet, good luck to you guys. I work close to downtown so I'm thinking some lunchtime workouts would help me get back into some better climbing shape! Can't wait to see the finished product...

Yes bouldering will be freestanding and have topouts. Floor will be the same as our gym in Monument (4 inches open cell foam, covered with 2 inches of carpeted closed cell foam) Vacummed every day=no dust in the air and soft landings :)

Initial total climbable square footage will be around 11,000 climbing & bouldering. The Bouldering will probably be 12ft at it's highest and climbing wall is around 43 foot at it's tallest. We plan on expanding with more walls in the future. We plan to add training walls (campus boards), dry tooling areas, adjustable cracks, and any other ideas that we come up with in the future.

Shooting for 1st of December for Climbing wall...1st of January for bouldering wall.

Here are some pics of the progress on the climbing wall I took today. Unfortunatley they don't do justice to the scale of the wall (it's big!)

Middle portion of the wall almost built:

Getting ready for the first ice climb of the 07/08 season.

This place looks cool! I have never been excited about a climbing gym until this moment.

Updated pics of progress today. The sheeting is going up on the long roof route. It will be about 80 feet of continuous climbing (20+) will be fully horizontal roof climbing. Longer than any other indoor route in Colorado without traversing.
