Oh, how quickly we digress :)
The routes are mostly up and I think they're better than ever.
I am a little biased, so I'll look forward to the feedback.
Thanks to Clay and Steve for helping set too.

Ice Climbers!!!

The 2008 Ice Night at THE ROCK is scheduled for Friday night November 7th.

We'll have tools and screws to try from Black Diamond and Petzl. Mountain Chalet will have some give a ways. I'm really excited about our newest sponsor, Trinity Brewing. Yes, that means will have some great beer to try after all the dry tooling. I hope we'll see you there. Check out http://www.climbingtherock.com/home.php for details on THE ROCK climbing gym.

Kevin,

Thanks for your comment on the kids with screws (loose?). We certainly identified that as an area for improvement. I don't want to get into details but we are going to rig up a system so you can place screws in the ice while desperately hanging from one tool on the wall. We want it to be much more realistic. We won't be letting any kids near it.

Thought you were going to say we would be placing screws off of the deck and tying the little ones off! HAH! My mistake. But in theory.....

We have a potential new sponsor. We should be receiving enough holds to set a final route in the comp with Ice Holdz brand holds. They actually make indoor holds that work like real ice (meaning you can swing your tools into it). http://www.iceholdz.com
I'll update when we receive the holds.

Mark,

I sent you an email earlier today just to extend a personal invitation. You're one of the few to attend all our Ice Nights so I wanted to make sure you're planning to come down tomorrow night.

BTW - We put up a route last night using our new Iceholdz. They are pretty cool. If you haven't tried them before I think you'll like them. Make sure your tools are sharp!

Alex et al., a few questions ~ ~ With the *new* ice are we going spikes or shoes..?

Will there be tools to demo..?

Same requirements as last time; leashes, helmets & anything else besides a harness sans the chalk..?

How much time is allowed for climbing vs. the comp..?

thanks in advance ~k

Kirra,
Here's the update:
We received in the Ice Holz, which were used to set our "finals" route. I previewed the route after setting it. The Ice Holz work awesome. Swing to light and your tool bounces off, too hard and you spend all your energy getting your tool out...just like real ice. We held out a couple of holds from the finals that will be added to one of the easier routes so those not up for the hard stuff can still try some swings. The rest is dry tooling.
To answer your questions:
No crampons...just climbing shoes...all the routes are set for you to use any feet on the wall. Like last time.
We will have BD and Petzl there again with tools to demo.
Requirements are some sort of leash to secure your tools. Best option is long cord attached to belay line so you can still shoulder your tools and switch hands. We'll have extra cord on hand. Helmets are also a requirement...we'll have extra on hand.
Schedule for the night will be:
6:00 start and climb all you want to warm up.
6:30 start the comp, with experienced folks...new ice/dry toolers get a demo of how to use the tools, while experienced climbers are starting comp.
Comp will be routes 1-5. Climbers will start on route one, allowed one fall on each, but have to start from bottom after fall. If they fall twice they are eliminated. If they complete the route, they move to the next, progressively harder route. Winner determined by who get's the farthest.
I'm guessing the comp will run pretty quickly, with the elimination format. We also will have a beginner route not in the comp, and two boulder problem routes not in the comp.
After everyone who desires to compete has completed the comp, we will award prizes to top finishers, male and female. We will also raffle some prizes for attendees.
Beer will be available when folks have finished climbing for the night.
Look forward to seeing you tonight!
