| Hi All,
I just met with a ranger for the City of Fort Collins and he wanted me to let the climbing community know that there have been a few break-ins lately at Horsetooth Reservoir climbing areas.
On Friday at least one car was broken into (someone smashed a side window) at the Piano Boulders/Duncan's Ridge parking area. The break-in happened during daylight hours in the afternoon. Apparently a purse, credit cards, ID, etc were stolen.
If you climb at either the Piano Boulders or Duncan's Ridge, please be aware and don't leave valuables in your car.
- *If you see a break-in in progress, you should call 911.
- *To report a break-in or related issue, call the Larimer County Sheriff's department non-emergency assistance line at (970)416-1985.
- *To reach an on duty City of Fort Collins ranger for the Piano Boulders area you can call (970) 416-2147.
Thanks, Cameron horsetoothhang@yahoo.com

| Thanks for the heads up, I know of quite a few people who head up there. Especially today, being as nice as it is. | |

| Bummer!
Were there other people at the Piano Boulders all day, or were they over at Duncan's Ridge?

| You did it Buster! You did it and then took a picture as your prize.
Just messin. I grew up in FTC and spent many a day at the Tropics, Torture Chamber (my fave), Rotary, Duncans, etc. and it's a real bummer that thugs that contribute little to nothing to society break a comfortable atmosphere in the Horsetooth area climbing community. I hope they catch the guys and then I hope they pass a law to practice cruel and unusual punishment... No wait that might be going to far, I at the least hope they catch the guys so people have a chance to possibly recoup their losses.

| That's crazy! How the f*** is anybody able to break in?! The parking area at the Rotary is usually teaming with people and the Piano Ridge parking lot is visible from the climbing area. Is this a failure by the general public to report a crime in process or are these the stealthiest window breaking thieves to cruise climbing hangouts? Either way, it sucks all around... | |

| The break-ins at the Piano Boulders seem to have taken place when people were climbing at Duncan's ridge, out of sight of the parking lot. We think that the thieves probably cruise by and check if anyone is climbing at the Piano Boulders. If no one is visible, they start smashing windows.
Not sure about Rotary. You are right that there are usually tons of people around. All the break-ins that I have heard of have happened in the middle of the day, so it appears the thieves are either pretty bold or really dumb...probably a combination of the two.

| FYI:
Saw a fresh break-in at Rotary last week. The woman said she had only been there 40 minutes or so. Late afternoon/early evening. Window broken, purse stolen.
Don't leave it in the car unless you're willing to part with it.

| Galen,
Thanks for the update.
A little bit of unofficial beta...
The break-ins might be associated with a late 90's grey Honda. Keep an eye out.

| Local paper also reported a bunch of break in at the Maxwell TH parking lot by the stadium. It is probably the same guy and/or group that is hitting this area. It has never been a problem before. The benfits of population growth. | |
