Shear, you will be able to find a $600 room to live in in Boulder.

You just graduated? Sweet dude, you will have some fun. If you have a bike you can get all around town on it quickly, so my advice is find some solid people to live with, regardless of where it is in town.

Wherever you decide remember this: there is a lifetime's worth of climbing nearby.

South Boulder (SoBo) has fewer snotty rich D-bags with perfect bodies than does NoBo or downtown. It is more diverse, I think. SoBo also has more older and post-college people than do the Hill or Goss-Grove neighborhoods. But whatever, it is what you make it.

It's a strange Laramie attitude.

I was so proud of that fucking place when I lived there. I wouldn't move back for a million dollars.

Whatever.

Boulder... is it where little girls solo the third Flatiron on their way to school? I'm jealous.

Just judging from the colloquy that takes place on this forum you know that's crap. If there is a predominant ethos to Boulder, its not liberalism--its environmentalism, new ageist/crystal-gazing/half-baked spirituality, or hemp culture. Oh--and don't forget the significant frat boy/sorority girl culture as well.

Have to disagree, Peter. That's not the ethos; it's just a pretty wrapper for the tacit conservatism that prevails on most significant matters.

A good rule of thumb is that money is rarely liberal.

GAWD!! Soooooooo many opinions about Boulder that has nothing to do with the question asked. I find more attitude from people who live away from Boulder han I ever find with locals.....I guess I can't expect more from this forum.

South Boulder has cheaper rent, is closer to Eldorado Springs and places south to climb. It's also pretty close to running trails. Generally the traffic and crowds are less in SoBo and the bike paths are good enough so you really don't need a car to drive around town.

Middle Boulder (between Baseline and Arapahoe) is pretty much nowhere.
The running trails are too far away, the travel time to any climbing unless you go bouldering at Flagstaff or Green Mtn,is pretty much the same and it's kinda nondescript. There's cheap housing but you really don't wanna go there. There can be inexpensive housing On The Hill, the student district in town.

North Boulder is the nice part of town and is close to bouldering, running trails and Boulder Canyon and closer to places north like RMNP, South St. Vrain. It's also very crowded and has bad traffic You can find rooms to rent for $600 but it takes more time. Rooms around North Boulder Park can be found and that's a nice, calm area. Living around Ideal Market will find the cheapest rentals and you are pretty close to the Pearl Street Mall which has huge entertainment value.

There is a guy, an older climber in town named Paul Sibley who has some inexpensive places to rent sometimes and he lives in the southern-most area of Boulder. A place called Marshall. You could look him up. Also, don't overlook Eldorado Springs itself. Lots of people are looking for roommates. I know a few. The climbing here is very close to your door.

Good luck,
Jack

Well, $600 might not take you far in town, but if you are limited in funds and have good transportation, the outlying county communities, Lafayette, Erie, Louisville, and Longmont are all more reasonably priced, lack the traffic and parking problems, and don't have student residence neighborghoods.

I used to rent a 1300 Sq Ft basement apartment in Lafayette for $550 a month.

We probably more than answered Shear's question in the first half dozen posts. Everything after that is entertainment. What's a conversation about Boulder without twenty pages of gratuitous opinions, mine included?

Umm...what is more diverse 93% white instead of 95% white?

If you are going to play in Boulder (climb, drink, bike) do yourself a favor and live in Boulder. Playing the live where it is cheaper game will get you to Ohio. You can then rent a house for $300 a month and make fun of the people living in Boulder.

Also, the hills around boulder are nice but paying $10 in gas to get to and from town will make renting downtown a bit more attractive. Boulder is more diverse than Ward, I think.

I like downtown and since you have uncertainties with the job you should rent a room without a lease and then ponder places like Erie and Cleveland.

You will love the climbing and the weather. I promise you that.

We're giving you the Boulder initiation now, so that you'll be prepared when you get here. lol. I was born and raised in Boston, so I speak from experience. It is a different world from what you are used to, and it will take some getting used to, but you will probably fall in love with the place when you finally realize how amazing the weather and outdoor resources are. If you tune out the Boulder politics and out-there philosophers, Boulder is like a little Utopia - especially for an outdoor athlete.

From scanning the responses I think I might be the only person so far who currently rents in Boulder. I've rented 7 apartments here in the past 13 years within the following geographical square: east of 9th, west of 30th, south of Arapahoe, north of Baseline. I currently live near 18th & Arapahoe and it's very convenient, though yeah, sometimes it can be noisy since a lot of college kids live around me.

There are definitely deals to be had if you look hard enough and have a bit of good luck and timing. BTW - there is a Boulder specific craigslist that nobody has posted yet.

I have the sweetest deal of anyone I know who rents - 2BR/1BA for $725 including utils. No lease. I live by myself. But I'm not moving :-)

However I do know someone with a room for rent in north boulder house for $500 + utils starting in August, but maybe that's negotiable. PM me and I'll forward it on.

Almost there......

Some keys to life in Boulder:

  • DO NOT dye your poodle.

  • DO NOT invest in a $1M property next to a retired judge and lawyer wife.

  • DO NOT try to strike up a flirty conversation with the women you see wearing Army fatigues and black t-shirts along Boulder Creek.

  • Learn the Boulder mating call, which sounds exactly like a razor tapping on a mirror.

  • DO NOT refer to your poodle (or Iguana, parakeet, snail..) as "My pet".

  • DO feel free to kill your own daughter and stage it as a botched kidnapping performed by a retard.

  • You can get a free 1st class return flight from Bangkok with shrimp and champagne if you make an utterly ridiculous confession (offer to end soon though).

I envy you. Those first years out of school may be the most memorable you'll ever have. Boulder is one of Colorado's most beautiful places. Since you are still young and can tolerate the smells and sounds I'd suggest you start out in the student periphery and then get your bearings as where to land next.

No worries, Cathy. I'm glad that you pointed it out, just in case Shear missed it the first time. I'm sure that he or she is doing some serious contemplation, after reading this thread.
